  1. iLearnNYC Virtual Advanced Placement (VAP) Info Session for Teachers

Limited Access to AP Courses in NYC More than half of NYC’s high schools do not offer Advanced Placement courses or students have difficulty gaining access to AP courses and exams due to: • lack of qualified AP teachers, • Small Learning Communities with minimal access to variety of course offerings, • failure of underrepresented students to be identified for AP course placement, • overall lack of cost effective virtual learning opportunities in AP studies.

  3. VAP Goals • To improve access to virtual AP courses for low-income & minority students. • To provide professional development to selected teachers to develop, conduct, and support virtual advanced placement courses • To increase the number of virtual AP courses for the NYSED AP repository to be shared statewide.

  4. Grant Timeline

  5. Cohort 1 Teachers • Virtual (online or blended) AP teachers who seek to deepen their content knowledge • Create College Board approved AP course • Master the development of transferring AP content to a virtual learning environment • Seek new technology tools to enhance virtual AP courses

  6. Cohort 2 Teachers • AP teachers who have used the virtual resources available via iLearnNYC or any other Learning Management System (LMS) • seek to strengthen their knowledge of virtual teaching and learning • Want to customize their vendor-created course content • Seek new technology tools to enhance virtual AP courses

  7. Cohort 3 Teachers • iLearnNYC high school teachers who plan to teach AP courses in the 2014-2015 school year • AP teachers who have not taught in a blended or online environment or are just becoming acquainted with virtual courses and resources available to them through iLearnNYC • Seek new technology tools to enhance virtual AP courses

  8. VAP Support to Teachers To help teachers develop rigorous AP content for delivery in a blended or online environment • PD • College Board • EdTech Leaders Online • iLearnNYC • Equipment • Laptop to school for teacher use • Support • VAP & iLearnNYC Implementation Managers

VAP PD • College Board • Effective Think Strategies for All Students – May 20th • Getting Your AP Course Started - June 6th @ 1865 Broadway, New York, NY 11123 for teachers • Summer Institute - August 26-29 @ Medgar Evers College Academy, Brooklyn, NY 11225 • EdTech Leaders Online • Online & Blended Course Design for Cohort 1- June 12th online • Online Instructor Training for Cohort 2 – June 19 th online • Blended Instructor Training for Cohort 3- June 19th onliine • iLead for teachers- for all teachers – May, July & August • iLearnNYC for teachers not already trained on the programs below and the Desire to Learn (D2L) platform– visit www.ilearnnyc.wikispaces.com for the schedule • AVENTA • APEX • FLVS

Teacher Expectations • Commit to completing program • Attend PD and meetings • Use the iLearnNYC learning environment -Desire to Learn (D2L) • Use a blended or online format for teaching • Participate in evaluation process (ie. survey/observations) • Share experience • Failure to complete program will result in equipment return
