Functions • produces female sex hormones • stores female reproductive cells • Ova- female reproductive cells
Reproductive Organs • Uterus- hollow, muscular, pear-shaped organ inside a female’s body…nourishes and protects the ovum from conception to birth • Ovaries- female sex glands that store the ova and produce female sex hormones • Fallopian tubes- pair of tubes with fingerlike projections that draw in the ovum • Vagina- muscular elastic passageway that extends from the uterus to outside the body
Ovulation/Menstruation • The process of releasing a mature ovum into the fallopian tubes each month (alternating) • Menstruation- shedding of the uterine lining • The menstrual cycle • Days 1-13- new egg is maturing in ovary • Day 14- mature egg is released • Days 15-20 egg travels through fallopian tube to uterus • Days 21-28 If egg has not been fertilized menstruation begins
Care of the Female Reproductive System • Bathe Regularly • Practice Abstinence from Sexual Activity • Breast Self-Exam • Regular Yearly Check-Ups • Vaccinations
