  12. What does the word “photosynthesis” mean? Answer: It is a Greek word that has two meanings. Photo means light and synthesis means putting together. It means that sunlight, water and carbon dioxide all have to come together and work together in order for energy and oxygen to be generated as products to be given off.

  13. What essentials do plants need? Answer: Light, water, nutrients, soil, etc… Light is from the sunlight, water from ground and carbon dioxide from the air.

  14. What are xylem tubes? What are they similar to? Answer: Xylem tubes are like blood vessels in a human. They transport vital nutrients to the plants.

  15. What is a stomata? Answer: A stomata is an opening on the plant leaf surface. They are responsible for exchange of gases in and out of the plant.

  16. Can photosynthesis take place underwater? Explain. Answer: Yes, it just takes place at a much slower rate because the rays of light must pass through the water before being absorbed by the leaf surface of an aquatic plant.

  19. What is Respiration? • After photosynthesis has allowed CO2 and water to be converted to sugar and oxygen, the energy must be released so that the plant can use the energy to grow. Respiration is the method by which the energy is released and used and is the reverse of photosynthesis– the controlled breaking down of glucose, releasing energy for plant growth, absorption, translocation, and other metabolic processes.

  20. Respiration Respiration is a basic life process that: • Enables plant cells to release energy that is then used in many energy-requiring chemical reactions within cells • Releases water and CO2 into the atmosphere • ATP is the energy that is produced from the cellular respiration process

  26. Plant Absorption Hair roots take up water and dissolved minerals from the soil through the process of osmosis. Water moves from the roots and through the plant via the xylem vessels.

Translocation • The vascular system of a plant is a channel for water and food to move through the system of the plant. • Movement of water and nutrients within plant • Occurs within vascular system: • Xylem tissues pull water upward • Phloem tissues move food from leaves to the rest of the plant

  29. Conclusion Photosynthesis, respiration, absorption, translocation, and transpiration are the five plant processes necessary in the development of healthy plants. It is important to know about these plant processes and how they can be encouraged and manipulated in the production of better plants.
