  1. Gaps in Assessment of Food Security and Nutrition: A Social Scientist Perspective Presentation by: Veronica Mwangi PhD Researcher; CETRAD, University of Nairobi 10.04.2019

  2. Outline • Definition of Food Security (FS) • Food security and nutrition situation • Measures and indicators of food security • Results from field survey • Gaps in food security measures and indicators

  3. Definition

  4. FS & Nutrition situation Share of children younger than 5 who suffer from stunting • Globally: • 821 million people undernourished • 151 million children <5 years stunted • 51 million children <5 years wasted • Africa: • 21% of population undernourished • 39% of worlds stunted children • (source: SOFI 2018; 2018 Global nutrition report) Source: World Bank

  5. Cont. • Kenya: • 11 M undernourished, 36% of total population severely food insecure • Children <5 years • 26% Prevalence of stunting • 4% Prevalence in wasting (source: SOFI 2018; 2018 Global nutrition report)

  6. Gap • The numbers have to come down! • Measurement of food security provides important insights • Yet, not all important factors are being measured in the current generation of research (Herforth and Ballard, 2016)

  7. Measures of Food Security & Nutrition

  8. Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES) 8 Questions 4 outcomes Food Secure Mild Food Insecure Moderately Food Insecure Severely Food Insecure 1. Did you worry that your household would not have enough food due to lack of money or other resources? 2. Did your household lack food…….? 3. Did your household not eat healthy…..? 4. Eat a low diversity of foods ? 5. Skip meals? 6. Eat less? 7. Feel hungry because they did not eat 8. Eat only once a day or go a whole day without eating

  10. Food Security Analysis Household Food Insecurity Access Prevalence (HFIAP) - %

  11. Results & Gaps • Inadequately measuring dietary quality and safety. • Need for regional based indicators capturing the variance on populations and areas. • Inability to measure changes in nutrition as a result of changes in food systems.

  12. Beyond Child Survival Source: Daily monitor, 2013 Better indicators around the food - nutrition nexus present an opportunity to address the challenge of nutrition in a multidisciplinary approach that considers the underlying causes of malnutrition.
