Site Visit Report – Mandra Lions Club • Outline of visit • 1.5 days – really short • Arrived Ranchi (Jharkhand) on Dec 3 • Drove 3 hours to Baghmundi • Met with staff of MLC – head – Somnath Roy • Went on motorbike up to Ayodhya Hills next morning • Visited village which had received goats • Malaria testing center • Goat breeding center • MLC headquarters • http://picasaweb.google.com/elapogeo/SiteVisitPurulia# • Outline of visit • 1.5 days – really short • Arrived Ranchi (Jharkhand) on Dec 3 • Drove 3 hours to Baghmundi • Met with staff of MLC – head – Somnath Roy • Went on motorbike up to Ayodhya Hills next morning • Visited village which had received goats • Malaria testing center • Goat breeding center • MLC headquarters • http://picasaweb.google.com/elapogeo/SiteVisitPurulia#
Site Visit • Impressions/Facts: • Received breakdown of expenses, list of people who received goats, dates, etc. • They are definitely working to make a change in these communities – all the people I met were in this for the cause and not the money. • They have over 70 people working on different projects across WB/Orissa. • MLC is working on around 10 projects at this time with other funders including AID Boston, Asha, UNICEF, etc. – new project with Asha Cornell. • Size of the operation makes me feel like they are caught up in the “NGO business” – not a bad thing.
Project Status • Achievements to date: • Completed construction of breeding site - operational • Distributed 40+ goats to villagers (local breed) • Want to expand farm to include nearby land for growing local crops in partnerships with community • Still on track to be profitable • Problems encountered: • Project delayed from Cyclone Alia (mid 2009) • Somnath had to recover from surgery (late 2009) • Still have problems connecting facility with electricity/water • Still to implement training program • Still to purchase hybrid goats for breeding program – plan was to do this in Jan 2010 – from partner in Maharashtra.
Next steps • To receive proposal from MLC for 2010 budget • In the original proposal the breakdown by year was: • For 1st year - Rs.3, 56,750.00 • 2nd year - Rs. 1,43,250.00 • 3rd Year – Rs. 1,43,250.00 • Contact Pittsburg and Morgantown about their continued support
