How to: Save a Wet Cell Phone By: Alex Schreiner English 393-Section 401 April 30th, 2010
Introduction • This process is designed for anyone whose cell phone becomes submerged in liquid. • Timeframe: As soon as possible after phone is submerged.
Materials • Silica gel packs or rice • http://www.silicagelpackets.com/ • Wet/dry shop vacuum • Towel or paper towels • Automobile • Small container • Wet cell phone
Step One • Remove the phone from the water.
Step Two • Remove the battery quickly. • If the battery is wet it may short circuit sensitive contacts.
Step Three • If you have a SIM card, remove it and pat it dry and leave it aside.
Step Four • Open and covers or external connectors so water can be removed from these gaps.
Step Five – Drying the phone • Shake the phone of excess water without dropping it. • Dry it with the paper towels or towel.
Step Six • Use the wet/dry vacuum to remove any additional water from the phone especially in slots and crevices. • You may also use compressed air to remove excess water from gaps and slots in the cell phone.
Step Seven • Depending on how long the cell phone was submerged, place the phone in a container with silica packs or in a bowl of rice. • As a last resort you may place the phone inside of your car on a hot day. • Many venders do not recommend exposing cell phones to high temperatures, but it will dry the phone quickly.
Step Eight • After a day or so, if the phone looks clean and dry, put the battery back in and test it. • If the phone still looks wet let it dry for another day.
Warnings • Do not force the water into the gaps with a towel. Only dry gently. • Do not use a blow dryer, microwave, or an oven.
