Learning Management System Selection Process We heard the sales pitches. We set up demo courses. We held faculty and student focus groups. We conducted surveys. We asked your opinion. We narrowed down the choices to TWO. Now, we’re presenting our findings.
Main elements required in a new Learning Management System. • New system must accommodate our paradigm shift from tool-centric online education to learning-centric. • New system must be up-to-date and industry compliant. • Must be user friendly for both students and faculty.
Blackboard CE6 • Familiarity with current version of WebCT will ease transition. • Part of a larger suite of products that we might grow into. (such as portfolio, college portal, etc. which are available at an extra cost)
ANGEL • Highly customizable for teachers and students. (Check out the nuggets!) • Strong ADA compliance. • Simple, intuitive, drag and drop interface makes course management easier. • PDA access for mobile devices. • Ease of migration.
Angel – Ease of use • Drag and drop arrangement of course materials and resources. • Intuitive navigation. • Ease of Course Management • Course Conversions (Bb had trouble with epak) • Learning Object Repository • Gradebook
Angel – Customer Service • Angel Tech Support: Very Responsive • Confirmed with conversations with other Angel institutions • Blackboard Tech Support has been deteriorating • Poor response to help requests • Inefficient Admin Interface
ANGEL –Learning Object Repository • Multiple sections of a single course can be created and modified by working within a single repository. • Share learning materials across multiple courses. • Unlike Blackboard, there is no extra charge for this module.
ANGEL - Gradebook • Facilitates easy set up of weighted grades. • Provides automated alerts help to identify at-risk students. • Exports grade data into an Excel spreadsheet.
We want to see what you think! We’ve set up courses in both ANGEL and Blackboard CE6 for you to examine. Please use the handouts provided to access the courses. Please note that the Introduction to Sociology course uses materials generated by the professor, and the Medical Terminology and Computer Concepts courses use e-pack materials (publisher provided).
