  1. Paul L. Dunbar has a new program this year called the “Pearls and Lace Society”. Founded in 2005 by Mrs. Sandra D. Horton, this program is designed to nurture young girls in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. The Pearls and Lace Society meets once per month to engage in character and esteem building activities, enhance academic achievement, broaden the girls’ concept of our world, and to encourage the building of life-long bonds of friendship. Other activities include field trips, arts and crafts, social events, photography, “book talks”, dinner, the theater, and so much more. Each girl must complete four modules during the year in order to participate in “The Crossing Ceremony”, which will be held May 2014. As a token of appreciation for improved effort in behavior, attitude, and academics, each girl receives a strand of “faux” pearls and a beautiful white lace handkerchief. Like the pearl, the young ladies of the Pearls and Lace Society strive to be virtuous, pure, and modest. They will undergo several complex changes to emerge as the “Cultured Pearls” which you will see in May. The “nacre” for them will be the directors, facilitators, teachers, parents, and friends of this incredible program. And like the pearl, our young ladies will grow in body, mind and spirit – rare jewels in their own right. Clearly, they will be the greatest treasures of Dunbar, Dallas, and maybe even the world! We are looking forward to an exciting and fun-filled year! Pearls and Lace Society
