  2. The Scenario • In the year 2006, the world ran out of oil and gasoline. All cars, trucks, trains, and planes could not move. • All factories had to close down. Suddenly, millions of people all over the world were without work. • With no work, they earned no money. Soon there were millions of hungry people.

  3. The Scenario • They began fighting for every scrap of food. Civil wars broke out in every nation. • The U.S. decided to get a group of students together and take them out of the country by SHIP. • The group of students they chose was YOUR class!!! • The U.S. wanted to save their lives in order to create a new society.

  4. The Scenario • For a while, the ship carrying the students sailed smoothly. But a few weeks later, a storm came up. • The ship hit a large sandbar. It started to sink. • The students got into lifeboats. They swam to an island. • This is a deserted, uncharted island.

  5. The Scenario • When they got to the island, the students couldn’t use cell phones and had no contact with the outside world • They were stranded and decided together that they would have to create a new society and government • Assign these roles: Recorder • 1st decide the name of your island

Can you live on the island? • Suppose that your class are the students on the island • But you have a lot of work to do if you want to survive on the island • Everyday brings a new problem • So this game is divided into days • The whole class will participate together to create a new society and government on the island

  7. Can you live on the island? • You will listen and decide how to solve these problems • Remember, there are NO right or wrong answers • Only YOU can decide the rules you will live by on the island • You may NOT communicate with the teacher, only your fellow classmates on the island

Day 1 • This is a serious problem…Do you need a leader or not? • You must DECIDE • Make 2 lists, on 1 list write down all the reasons you can think of for having a leader…on the other write all the reasons for not having a leader • If your class decides to have a leader you must decide how to choose one • Your class must solve this problem as quickly as they can

  9. Day 2 • Now you must solve this problem • Do you need laws or not? • If so, what laws? • Who will make the laws? • How will you enforce the laws? • You must decide

  10. Day 3 • There is much work to do to keep your group together-and to stay alive • For example, some sort of shelter must be built • What other jobs must be done during your first few months on the island? • Make a list of all the jobs you can think of and who will do them?

Day 4 • You must decide what to do about property • Should everyone own the entire island together? • Should you divide it up? • If you do divide it up, some people will not get good land • Where will they live? • Will they have to work someone else’s land in exchange for living on it? • Will they have to pay rent for land they use? • You must decide how to solve this problem

Day 5 • You must decide what to do about this problem? • Should you have money or not? • What problems would you have with the money? • What problems would you have without money? • If you decide to have $$$, who will get the $$$? • Will everyone get the same amount each week? • What will you use for money? • You must decide

  13. Day 6 • Five members of your group disagree with the decision you made about money • They say they will not go along with your decision • You must decide what to do about them • Should they be punished? Should they be put in prison? • Should you just leave them alone? • You must decide

  14. Wrap-up discussion • Describe the different emotions you experienced throughout this activity • Why do you think you experienced this emotion? • is your form of government justified? Laws, punishment? Why or why not? • What would you have done differently? • Why do you think we did this activity? • How will your experience in this activity relate to the formation of the Articles of confederation and our new nation?

  15. Wrap-Up Activity • Break into groups of 3 • Read the excerpt in your textbook on page ( 40-42) on the Articles of Confederation. • Write down 3 ways this activity relates to our studies. • Group Discussion.

  16. The Giver…..connection • Break up into groups of (3) quickly! • Compare and contrast your class government formed here on your island to the society and government in the book, The Giver • Write down at least (2) similarities and differences.
