  1. 1.4 – 1.6 Properties Objectives: Recognize and use the properties of identity and equality Use the Distributive Property to evaluate and simplify expressions Recognize and use the commutative and associative properties

  2. Addition Properties

  3. Multiplication

  4. Properties of Equality

  5. Distributive Property • In Symbols: • For any numbers a, b, ca(b+c) = ab + ac or (b+c)a = ba + caa(b-c) = ab - ac or (b-c)a = ba - ca • In Words: • Multiply what is outside the parentheses with each term inside the parentheses. • Examples:

  6. Examples • Use the distributive property to find the product.

  7. Term Like Terms • After Distributing you must look for like terms. • What is a like term? 4x + 5 • Like term is a term that has the same variables to the same power ex) 4x and 2x Term

  8. Coefficient – number in front of the variable. If there is no number, we assume the coefficient is 1. Exponent – the power of the variable. If there is no number, we assume the exponent is 1. Variable – the letter or letters used to represent an unknown value. Proper Terminology

  9. Examples Ex1) 4(n-5)+2n Ex2) 5x2-4y-3(x2-y)

  10. Evaluating Expressions with Properties • Evaluate the following expression naming the property used in each step. Property Used

  11. Assessment/Homework 1.4 - 1.6 p.29-31 3, 7-12, 16-28evens, 42 – 52 evens
