Strategic Bridges • Study of Evangelism Methods • How to Build Biblical Bridges • Practice Patient Peacemaking There are multiple types of Buddhists and each Buddhist people group has its unique kind of Buddhism. Lim, David “Sharing Jesus in the Buddhist world”
Strategic BridgesSTUDY OF EVANGELISM METHODS In 1813, Adoniram Judson, the first missionary to Burma, boldly pronounced the power of the Church of Jesus to supplant the thousands of temples and places of idolatrous worship that he found on arriving in Burma. In 1816, he stated in his first tract for the Burmese people, written in 1816, he included this sanguine prediction: “About one or at most two hundred years hence the religion of Buddha, of Brahma, of Muhammad and of Rome, together with all other false religions, will disappear and the religion of Christ will pervade the whole world; all quarrels and wars will cease and all the tribes of men will be like a band of mutually loving brothers.” After six years in Burma – despite sickness, family deaths and prison – he had his first convert. Judson also translated the entire Bible into the Burmese tongue. On his death, he left a church of close to 8,000 members. Strategic BridgesSTUDY OF EVANGELISM METHODS Incarnational Missiology • Friendship Evangelism- caring for the whole person: health, family, financial, social and religion • 1 Peter 3:15 “but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect” • 1 Cor. 9:23 “I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings.” Lim, David “Sharing Jesus in the Buddhist world”
Strategic BridgesSTUDY OF EVANGELISM METHODS Showing Friendship by: Learning Language Exploring Culture Understanding basis of religion Being a good listener Often by helping meet a need, you will gain an open door into a family. Travel or watching videos about your focus area of the world can also begin conversations that start friendships.
Strategic BridgesSTUDY OF EVANGELISM METHODS IncarnationalMissiology • Church/Cell multiplication – small, disciple-making groups; effective in restricted countries: China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia Since collective worship is not a part of Buddhist practice, a Buddhist may feel more comfortable in a small, familial setting. • Mark 3:14-15 “And he appointed twelve (whom he also named apostles) so that they might be with him and he might send them out to preach and have authority to cast out demons.”
Strategic BridgesSTUDY OF EVANGELISM METHODS IncarnationalMissiology • Simple Lifestyle – Many Buddhist countries are poor and Buddha taught that wealth does not guarantee happiness and is impermanent. By living a simple lifestyle, more resources can be used to help others and support missions. Outreach to the poor, orphaned and homeless builds goodwill among your people group and could see a harvest among the marginalized.
Strategic BridgesSTUDY OF EVANGELISM METHODS Dialogical Christology – What contextualized form should the gospel take in order to make sense to Buddhists? • Radical Christo-centrism • Dynamic Theologizing • Creative Spirituality
Strategic BridgesSTUDY OF EVANGELISM METHODS Dialogical Christology 1. Radical Christo-centrism-What contextualized forms should the Christian gospel take in order to make sense to Buddhists and elicit the right faith response? Evangelism is an offer of a personal relationship with God through Christ, not a religion, not even Christianity.
Strategic BridgesSTUDY OF EVANGELISM METHODS Dialogical Christology 2. Dynamic theologizing– *syncretism danger* Evangelicals must be ready to formulate fresh theological categories as we try to evangelize Buddhists. For Theravedan Buddhists, Jesus may be introduced as the Maitreya who has already come. For Mayahana Buddhists, He may be presented as the dharma who leads to the true nirvana. For Tibetan Buddhists, Jesus may be taught as the “Lama of lamas.”
Strategic BridgesSTUDY OF EVANGELISM METHODS Dialogical Christology 3. Creative spirituality-*syncretism danger* Seeks a truly indigenous expression of faith. Does not involve shoving westernized religion down their throats. Tao fong shan was a Christian outreach begun in 1930 that used a building with Buddhist architecture. It also used Buddhist forms of meditation, teaching and mission. It continues today, but has lost its early fervor.
Strategic BridgesSTUDY OF EVANGELISM METHODS Diaconal Ecclesiology – this tenant advocates that we leave behind the ecclesiology of Christendom and trade it for a servant-church model in the Buddhist culture.
Strategic BridgesSTUDY OF EVANGELISM METHODS Diaconal Ecclesiology 1. Ecclesial Indigenization-From the start, church plants should conform to the Three-Self model: self-governing, self-supporting and self-propagating. Regarding governance, key leaders should be Buddhist converts. Regarding support, a simple church structure should be used and economic development is a key goal. Regarding propagation, total mobilization of Buddhist converts is necessary.
Strategic BridgesSTUDY OF EVANGELISM METHODS Diaconal Ecclesiology 2. Ecclesial re-structuring- In order for ‘church multiplication through total mobilization’ to occur there must be a decentralizing of church structure. Although this may seem counter-cultural, spreading of the Gospel can only occur through networks of simple and small reproducing ‘disciple making groups,’ instead of gradual growth into a few mega-churches. Buddhists are not loyal to one monk or one temple, they frequent many and go there to visit and perform religious ceremonies. The ‘local church’ structure may possibly be a ‘Western Christian culture’ development. The idea behind this outreach is that there was no ‘local church’ in the New Testament rather ‘house churches.’
Strategic BridgesSTUDY OF EVANGELISM METHODS Diaconal Ecclesiology 3. Socio-political Involvement- Shows Buddhists we care for the people’s welfare while connecting believers to local leaders. This shows the community that the Christians are ‘the church to the poor.’
Strategic Bridges Generally Buddhists do not have an understanding of the Bible or any cultural context of Christianity. A Buddhist will not understand having a personal relationship with Buddha or a savior. Worship is expressed as adoration of the Buddha and one’s ancestors. When describing Buddhism, a person will discuss rituals and generally not beliefs.
Strategic Bridges But there are common ideas to build upon: • An understanding of a spiritual world • A right path and a wrong path • Prayer/Meditation is important • Compassion should be nurtured • Self-discipline has spiritual value. The Compact Guide to World Religions; Dean Halverson
Strategic BridgesHOW TO BUILD BIBLICAL BRIDGES • The Buddhist is concerned with overcoming suffering. He believes that the trick is to understand that “there is no enduring self that suffers.” • The Bible teaches that suffering is real and that only those who trust in Christ will be set free from sorrow, either after the believer’s death or Christ’s return. Franz Metcalf, Buddha in Your Backpack
Strategic BridgesHOW TO BUILD BIBLICAL BRIDGES • Buddhists believe that a person desires to do evil but that they must reach “Nirvana” which is enlightenment or self-control and a meritorious life. • As Christians, we also seek to reject evil desires and follow Christ’s standards. 2 Timothy 2:22, “Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.” http://www.4truth.net/site/apps/nl/content3.asp?c=hiKXLbPNLrF&b=784467&ct=938981
Strategic BridgesHOW TO BUILD BIBLICAL BRIDGES • The Buddhist believes he can transfer surplus merit from doing good to others. • Jesus has unlimited merit. • Man has no merit on his own nor can not collect merit from others. Ephesians 2:8-9 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-not by works, so that no one can boast.” http://www.4truth.net/site/apps/nl/content3.asp?c=hiKXLbPNLrF&b=784467&ct=938981
Strategic BridgesHOW TO BUILD BIBLICAL BRIDGES • There is no “hope” in nirvana only death and extinction. • The hope of the believer is eternal life in a new heaven and new earth. Rev. 21:4 “There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things (suffering) has passed away.” http://www.4truth.net/site/apps/nl/content3.asp?c=hiKXLbPNLrF&b=784467&ct=938981
Strategic BridgesHOW TO BUILD BIBLICAL BRIDGES • Because of karma, the life of a Buddhist is very oppressive. Karma is the law of moral cause and effect which is completely rigid and impersonal. • As Christians, we know that a personal God listens to those who prays, has mercy on those who repent and cares for each person. Romans 8:28 “In all things God works for the good of those who love him.” http://www.4truth.net/site/apps/nl/content3.asp?c=hiKXLbPNLrF&b=784467&ct=938981
Strategic BridgesHOW TO BUILD BIBLICAL BRIDGES • Buddhists must convince themselves that they have no personal significance. • The Bible teaches that we are made in God’s image and for God’s glory. • Jesus loved us so much that He gave His life to offer eternal life to anyone who trusts in Him. Romans 5:8 “God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” http://www.4truth.net/site/apps/nl/content3.asp?c=hiKXLbPNLrF&b=784467&ct=938981
Strategic BridgesHOW TO BUILD BIBLICAL BRIDGES The Eightfold Path & how to respond Because Buddhists believe a good life is measured by following the Eightfold Path, Christians can use the stages of this path to introduce them to Christ.
Strategic BridgesHOW TO BUILD BIBLICAL BRIDGES The Eightfold Path & how to respond Right Concepts (aspirations) James 4:1-3 “What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don't they come from your desires that battle within you? You want something but don't get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.” 1 Corinthians 10:31 “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”
Strategic BridgesHOW TO BUILD BIBLICAL BRIDGES The Eightfold Path & how to respond Right Speech Matthew 12:36 “But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken.” http://www.4truth.net/site/apps/nl/content3.asp?c=hiKXLbPNLrF&b=784467&ct=938981
Strategic BridgesHOW TO BUILD BIBLICAL BRIDGES The Eightfold Path & how to respond Right Vision (knowledge or views) John 14:6 “Jesus answered, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Acts 4:12 “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.” http://www.4truth.net/site/apps/nl/content3.asp?c=hiKXLbPNLrF&b=784467&ct=938981
Strategic BridgesHOW TO BUILD BIBLICAL BRIDGES The Eightfold Path & how to respond Right Behavior (conduct) John 14:21 “Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him.” James 3:17 “But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.” http://www.4truth.net/site/apps/nl/content3.asp?c=hiKXLbPNLrF&b=784467&ct=938981
Strategic BridgesHOW TO BUILD BIBLICAL BRIDGES The Eightfold Path & how to respond Right Livelihood (work) Matthew 16:31, 33 “So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?’ But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” 2 Thessalonians 3:10 “For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: If a man will not work, he shall not eat.” http://www.4truth.net/site/apps/nl/content3.asp?c=hiKXLbPNLrF&b=784467&ct=938981
Strategic BridgesHOW TO BUILD BIBLICAL BRIDGES The Eightfold Path & how to respond Right Effort Hebrews 12:1-2 “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” http://www.4truth.net/site/apps/nl/content3.asp?c=hiKXLbPNLrF&b=784467&ct=938981
Strategic BridgesHOW TO BUILD BIBLICAL BRIDGES The Eightfold Path & how to respond Right Concentration (mindfulness) Romans 8:7 “The sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so” Philippians 2:5 “Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.” http://www.4truth.net/site/apps/nl/content3.asp?c=hiKXLbPNLrF&b=784467&ct=938981
Strategic BridgesHOW TO BUILD BIBLICAL BRIDGES The Eightfold Path & how to respond Right one-pointed thought (meditation; it focuses inward, on yourself.) Biblical meditation focuses on God and His Word. Colossians 3:2 “Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.” Joshua 1:8a “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it.” http://www.4truth.net/site/apps/nl/content3.asp?c=hiKXLbPNLrF&b=784467&ct=938981
Strategic BridgesHOW TO BUILD BIBLICAL BRIDGES Using a Buddhist’s understanding of good and evil, it is important to explain the pre-Genesis event in which God cast Satan and his demons out of heaven and into the air. This links to their ideas of spirits with angels, demons and Satan.
Strategic BridgesHOW TO BUILD BIBLICAL BRIDGES BIBLE STUDY #1 Begin the first Bible study session by reading 2 Timothy 3:16 “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness”
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. God is God. He alone is Lord. God created heaven, a special place. God created special spirits called angels to serve him. God created angels to do whatever God told them to do. He alone is Lord. He is king of all the universe. The angels God created were beautiful creatures. They had special powers. God didn't create just a few angels. God created many, many, angels. God created a multitude of angels so that they could serve him, and praise him, and worship him, and do whatever God told them to do. And they did. God is all-powerful.
But there was one angel who had a mean heart. He was evil. He was a murderer, and a liar. He was the father of lies. There was no truth in him. He was full of pride. His heart was full of pride. He thought he was very important. Some of the other angels stopped serving God and followed this angel. They didn't do what God wanted them to do. They rebelled against God. They sinned.
God is holy and just. God hates sin. God is jealous. He will not leave the guilty unpunished. God must punish sin. God cast that angel and all of the other evil angels out of his presence. God cast that angel and all of the other evil angels out of heaven. God cast that angel and all of the other evil angels into the air.
That evil angel's name is Satan, the devil. Satan rules his angels, the demons, and the evil spirits in his kingdom of evil. Satan is the ruler of this world. Even today, Satan and his evil spirits roam around looking for ways to trick people and keep them from knowing God. Satan also works to tempt people to disobey God.
God is all-powerful. God is loving, merciful, and gracious. God did not go far away and leave humankind alone. God had a plan for Satan, a plan that would break Satan's power, a plan that will punish Satan forever.

Strategic BridgesPRACTICE PATIENT PEACEMAKING We as Christians must be patient with our Buddhist friends.
Strategic BridgesPRACTICE PATIENT PEACEMAKING Remember that Buddhist have several special interests: -striving to live according to the principles of the Eightfold path -escaping from the suffering of endless life -seeking peace through meditation (common in American Buddhism) http://www.4truth.net/site/apps/nl/content3.asp?c=hiKXLbPNLrF&b=784467&ct=938981
Strategic BridgesPRACTICE PATIENT PEACEMAKING Avoid terms such as: “new birth”, “rebirth”, “regeneration” or “born again” Instead use phrases such as: “new power for living a holy life,” “promise of eternal life without suffering,” or “gift of unlimited merit.” http://www.4truth.net/site/apps/nl/content3.asp?c=hiKXLbPNLrF&b=784467&ct=938981
