Author intent The author intended for this chapter to inform the reader of the horrors of a meatpacking plant and generate sympathy for the people who work there
Main points, Workers at meat packing plants use long sharp knives to slice the beef, often the line is moving so fast that the employees are forced to rush and make mistakes. This often leads to injuries on the worker and on their neighbors on the line as they slip or miss cut with the knives. The workers are often so rushed that many have taken up Meth just to keep up with the job.
Main points cont. The workers who are injured are discouraged from reporting it and the injuries that are reported are downplayed extremely. Many companies have been caught keeping two injury logs one of an accurate account of all injuries and the other is the one that they present to OSHA Injured workers are often laid off without warning or denied pay or assistance with medical bills. Employees are sent to a company doctor who often simply suggests that they be moved to less strenuous position rather than take time off or get surgeries.
effectiveness The author uses a number of statistics and sources showing that all the information stated is indeed factual The information presented itself is likely to be skewed toward her own opinion due to a lack of information or interviews from the other side of the argument
