first, to search for music in MORRIS, you need to know about… Uniform Titles
Titles of Musical Works • …are not like titles of books • they can vary in language, word order, etc. • often a“Title” search won’t work • for example, all these titles were found on different scores and recordings of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony: • Fifth symphony • Symphony no. 5 • Symphony nr. 5 • Symphony in C minor • Symphonie V • Ve symphonie • Symphonie n. 5 • Symphonie no. 5 • Simfoniia no. 5 • Symfoni nr. 5 • Symphonies 3-5 • Symphonies 5 & 9
Uniform Titles • are added by our cataloguers when they put items into MORRIS • provide a predictable, uniform way to find musical works • e.g. the uniform title for Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony is: Beethoven, Ludwig van, 1770-1827. Symphonies, no. 5, op. 67, C minor
What do Uniform Titles Look Like? • …for non-distinctive, or generic titles, like symphonies, sonatas, or quartets? • …for distinctive titles like Daphnis et Chloé or Appalachian Spring?
Uniform Titlesfor Non-Distinctive,GenericTitles …consist of 4 major parts
1. Form of composition • name of a type or form of composition, usually in the plural • examples: • symphonies • sonatas • quartets • suites • concertos
2. Medium of performance • what instruments, groups of instruments or voices are involved • examples: • piano • violin • orchestra • instrumental ensemble • chorus
3. Numeric identifying elements • serial numbers, opus numbers or thematic catalogue numbers • examples: • no. 5 • op. 23 • K. 550 • BWV 1044
4. Key & other info • examples: • B♭ major • arr. (an arrangment for other instruments than the original ones) • piano vocal score • English & German

Uniform titles for distinctive titles …like Turandot, Messiah, Appalachian Spring
Only 2 things to remember: • they’ll be in the original language • they’ll have no initial articles (the, a, an, le, la, etc.)

Author/Title Keyword Searching • usually the easiest way to find a specific work by a composer
Keyword Search Tip: Choosing keywords • use just a few key words and phrases from your musical work, e.g. Canonin D for 3 violins and continuo, by JohannesPachelbel Author/Title Keyword = pachelbel and canon
Keyword Search Tip • use “quotation marks” to indicate a phrase • keeps words together, e.g. “magic flute”

Finding a uniform title you don’t know 3. now you can do a new Author/Title Keyword search: mozart and zauberflote …and you’ll get most, or all of them instead of just the ones that happened to have the title in English
MORRIS search tools: Limiting • to narrow your search • MORRIS limits: • format, e.g. CD, record, cassette, score • location, e.g. Mills, Thode, Innis • language, e.g. English, French, German
How to limit before you search: go to theAdvanced Search screen
How to limit after you’ve searched: choose a limit from the drop-down menu
Keyword Search Tip • use the truncation symbol * • also called “wild card” • retrieves your search word with different endings, e.g. symphon*retrieves symphony symphonie symphonies symphonien, etc.

Combining Terms: OR • broadens your search • use for synonyms, alternate spellings, abbreviations, etc. • always enclose your “or” words in parentheses: mozart and (“magic flute”orzauberflote)
Author Searching • to see a list of everything by a composer, performer, or author, for example: Author = purcell henry • scroll down to see titles of works listed in alphabetical order

What if you don’t have a title, just a topic? • try a Title Keyword search: music* and german* and renaissance • look for 1 good book, like:

Locating a Book • if necessary, click Current Location and Status
Which Location? • Mills • Innis • Thode • Health
Which Collection within the library? • Mills Bookstacks • Mills Reference • Mills 2 hour Reserve • Mills Periodicals, etc.
What Call Number? • items are arranged on the shelf by call number • if it’s in the Bookstacks, the call number also tells you what floor to go to…
MillsBook Locator • for Bookstacks: • left column • first 1 or 2 letters of call number = floor • for other locations, right column
What’s the Status? • Check shelf: in • Checked out: out • Non-circulating…? • doesn’t go out; should be on the shelf • In Storage, On Order, In Process, etc.
To recall a Checked Out book… • ...or request a book that’s In Storage, In Process, On Order, etc. • at top of MORRIS screen, click the “Forms: Recall, Storage, etc.” tab, scroll down to Borrowing/Circulationand follow the prompts
