Roots of the Movement • Began in the 1950s with the Beat generation • Youth were uncertain about their future • Become more active • Increase in college enrollment • New sense of freedom • Bond with others with similar views
The New Left • Concerned with social injustices • Controlled by the “1%” • Students for a Democratic Society (SDS): Fight against “the man” and big corporations
