WJCC School Division presents Middle school English/language arts honors courses for grades 7 and 8
Honors courses Honors courses are taught at an accelerated pace and at advanced level of complexity with the goal of preparing more students for the rigorous fast paces of high school Advanced Placement and dual credit classes. Teachers use the same curriculum as in the regular education classroom, but explore concepts deeper and further.
Course work The texts, writing assignments, and other assessments in these courses are all more demanding and will require an increased time commitment outside of the normal day.
purpose Ultimately these classes are designed to help more students be college- and career-ready, as evidenced by their performance on the ACT, SAT, and ASVAB assessments.
Learning expectations of honors students • Strives towards excellence • Needs little external motivation to follow through on work • An eye for important details • High level of written and oral communication • Self-starter / Perseverance • Excellent work ethic with strong independent learning habits • Large focus on writing with revision and editing of written work • Great amount of independent reading • Completes assignments on time • Has good attendance • Arrives to classes on time • Collaborates well with others • Maintains a C or better average in Honors course
Things to remember when signing up for an honors course: • Students should expect to spend a greater amount of time each week on outside-of-class test preparation and assignments. • Students will be expected to do more critical thinking and therefore may find earning an “A” to be more challenging.
Things to remember: • Attendance is critical; it is imperative that your student is in class everyday. • Withdrawal from honors classes will be considered only during 1st semester. If a class change is made, the grade will follow the student. • Students who drop honors classes will not be permitted to pick them up again 2nd semester. • A student can add an honors class at semester if he/she has a recommendation from their existing regular class teacher.
