  3. Genetics in Clinical Practice:A Team Approach • Project description • Joint effort – CDC and Dartmouth Medical School (IML)

  4. Importance of the Team • Multiple viewpoints – perceptions • Include educators • Include people working in the field

  5. Compromise Necessary to achieve the best product – professionals (geneticists) may be content experts, but often not perception experts

  6. Importance of Networking • There are many great programs out there • How can you “add to”/ compliment other programs • How can other programs “add to” / compliment your efforts • Way too much information for any one effort to cover

  7. Two Main Goals for CDC • Provide genetic education to improve use of genetic testing and knowledge from Human Genome Project • Develop and test new educational model

  8. Adult (Practicing Professionals) Model • Don’t attempt to explain everything • Reference glossaries and other resources • Get to the “importance” quickly to maintain interest

  9. Adult (Practicing Professionals) Model • Let the learner decide order • Leave the learner with some questions to encourage further learning • Let the primary care physician decide what level of care they can/can’t or will/won’t provide

  10. Evaluation of the program • Review by Advisory Board • Workshop review by primary care physicians in Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire • Medical students at Dartmouth • “Trained” patients • AAMC – American Association of Medical Colleges • Recording all feedback and comment
