ECV Inventory Survey Approach • ECV Inventory Database gathers user input data from an enhanced survey web site: http://ecv-inventory.com/ecv2/ • This is a second generation site. Redesign was necessary for integration with the EOHandbook database. • Contains two questionnaires, one for current/existing and one for future climate data records • 45 total questions based on 5 topics (General, Usage, Stewardship, Properties, Access) • Many questions use menu selections (12 menus). Some example menus are: Agency, Project, ECV, Satellite, Data Format. • Site has limited search and analytical capabilities. Intended use is strictly to gather data • All data records can be exported to an Excel spreadsheet for analysis purposes or for integration to other applications • Envision this as a living database with the record information updated as agencies desire • Need to decide if a formal annual call to update is appropriate, similar to the MIM WGClimate Meeting, Darmstadt, March 4 – 7, 2014

ECV Inventory / Access to Data • ECV Inventory Database is integrated with the EO Handbook Database (EOHD) for user viewing, searching, and analyzing of climate data records (CDRs) • All CDRs are imported to the EOHD automatically via the Excel interface mentioned earlier • The EO Handbook Database (EOHD) site, formerly referred to as the CEOS Missions, Instruments, and Measurements (MIM) Database contains official agency reported information • EOHD site links the CDRs to the extensive official mission, instrument, and measurement information contained in the EOHD • The EOHD site provides mission timeline analysis for various measurements to promote gap analyses. A similar timeline analysis capability will be available for the CDRs. • - Need to decide if timelines should be displayed for measurements or for ECVs, etc. • Site has good search and analytical capabilities. Intended use is to educate and for users to gather usable information for decision-making WGClimate Meeting, Darmstadt, March 4 – 7, 2014

User Specified ECV Inventory Data Query Capability • Planned Query Capability • Search by • Responsible organization, ECV type, TCDR, Physical Quantity (or type of measurement), Satellite, and Instrument • Display records by • Calendar timelines for multiple records grouped by ECV type, TCDR, and Physical Quantity. View additional information beside the timeline? Could include responsible organization, satellite, and instrument • Advanced query of records by • Sorting timelines by responsible organization, satellite, and instrument • Providing statistics summary counts of number of records per agency, per ECV type, per TCDR type, etc WGClimate Meeting, Darmstadt, March 4 – 7, 2014

Future Plans • Define Query Capabilities and Expand the EO Handbook to include the ECV Inventory data • Decide on future survey needs; once a year or ongoing through the ecv-inventory.com site. Data would periodically be imported to the EO Handbook for updates • Future surveys could be tied to the MIM annual call that goes out in May of each year • How will this data be used? Will agencies use it to coordinate where to invest resources to obtain a global, continuous climate record? WGClimate Meeting, Darmstadt, March 4 – 7, 2014
