Tripitaka ( or Three Baskets) • The main written source of Buddha’s wisdom • It is referred to as the Three Baskets because the palm leaf manuscripts Buddha wrote on were kept in three different baskets. • These baskets are called • Vinaya-Pitaka, Sutta-Pitaka, and Abhidhamma-Pitaka.
Vinaya-Pitaka • “Basket of Discipline” • Consists of 5 books that address the rules of monastic life.
Sutta-Pitaka • “Basket of Discourse” • Is 5 collections and contains the teachings of Buddha. • This is considered the most important text for Buddhists. • The Sutta-Pitaka also contains 424 verses on ethics
Example… In this world hate never dispelled hate. Only love dispels hate. This is the law, ancient and inexhausitible. Anger is like a chariot careering wildly. He who curbs his anger is the true charioteer. Others merely hold the reins.
Abhidhamma-Pitaka • “Basket of Further Teachings” • Discusses the nature of consciousness and includes technical explanations of Sutta-Pitaka.
Sutras • The Mahayana school of Buddhism contributed to the sacred literature by adding Sutras. • These statements attempt to explain an individuals situation in life and how an individuals action might affect his or her next life.
