Running Record • Annotated copies of material a child has read aloud with miscues and other reading behaviors noted. • Sample page 82 • Completed at, or near, a child’s instructional level • Originally used with Reading Recovery • Typically collected more frequently for struggling readers. • Measured using a cold read • 90%+ accuracy = instructional level

  3. Reading Behaviors • Physical Behaviors: tracking, distracted, loses place, fluency, skips text, squints, etc… • Cognitive Behaviors: Use of comprehension strategies, attitude toward reading overall. • Uses one or more strategies, uses context, rereads, sub vocalizes to make sense, attempts self correction.

  4. Keeping Progress Notes • Use objective language • Samples page 87 • State observations in the positive form: • Billy read with 90% accuracy. vs. Billy made 12 miscues while reading. • Ann uses 2 reading strategies when she encounters unknown words. • Observe every student
