“No Graven Images…” • Exodus 20:4 • But God knows we need “reminders.” • Daylight savings time. April 15!! • Also in spiritual matters. • God loves you. • God expects and deserves respect from us. • Monuments serve this purpose.
Psalm 78:1-6 • Listen! Give ear! • To: dark sayings of old (mysteries), parables, teachings of “fathers”. • “That the generation to come might know, even the children yet to be born…” v. 6
Monument to God’s Love • Passover – Deut. 7:6-9 – redeemed from Egypt. • Deut. 6:4-9; 20-24 • When kids ask – point them to the monument. • For us – John 3:16; Rom. 5:8 • Titus 3:3-8 • Continue – Don’t turn aside as Israel.
Monument of Man’s Lust • Psalm 78:18 • Ex. 16:31 – Manna would sustain life, and as a bonus, was sweet. • Numbers 11:4, 18-20, 31-34 • Always want “more”. Dissatisfied with God, God dissatisfied with man. • Whether it’s more territory, a king “like the nations”, or whatever; leads to distruction. • I Cor 10:6, 11; James 1:12-15
Monument of God’s Departure • Psalm 78:60 – Shiloh – I Sam. 4:5-12 • Ezekiel 8-11- Jerusalem • Ezek. 43 – God can return • Rom. 3:23; 6:23 – sin brings separation • Repentance brings reconciliation.
