Writing a Vignette In the novel The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, the narrator offers a scrapbook of her life and her neighborhood by including “snapshots” of people, places, memories, and perceptions important to her. Emulating Cisneros’ style, write a personal vignette that shows one brief moment*, person, perception, or setting from your life. Your vignette should focus on images and emotions, and communicate mood through the use of connotation, active verbs, specific details, imagery, metaphors and similes Limit your vignette to 500 words * If you choose to describe a moment, your vignette should not cover days, weeks, or months of your life but rather should focus on a specific point in time
Some things to think about... Before you begin writing your vignette, we need to explore potential topics. To help you with this brainstorming, answer the following questions on a blank sheet of paper. Each question will be displayed for one minute. During that time, write as much (and as detailed) an answer to the question as possible. The more detail you put into this exercise, the easier the next activity will be.
Question #1 • Describe your earliest memory. Write about the first thing you can remember from your early childhood.
Question #2 • Describe a memory from your favorite celebration. Write about a birthday, graduation, bar mitzvah, or any other time when you or someone you cared for was celebrated.
Question #3 • Describe your first altercation. Write about the first (or most memorable) time you were in a physical or verbal fight with a friend or playground enemy.
Question #4 • Describe your most memorable holiday. Write about the best (or worst) holiday experience (Christmas, New Years, Rosh hashana, Hanukah)
Question #5 • Describe the best thing you have ever done for someone else. Write about the greatest “act of kindness” you have ever committed.
Question #6 • Describe the worst thing you have ever done to someone else. Describe an act of meanness, spite, or cruelty.
Question #7 • Describe your best (or worst) athletic moment. Write about your best or worst play, or the best or worst game of your athletic career.
Question #8 • Describe your first “love”. Write about the first time you “knew it was love” (even if it really wasn’t).
Question #9 • Describe your proudest moment. Write about your greatest or most impressive accomplishment.
Question #10 • Spend another minute writing more about your favorite topic from questions 1-9. • First memory • Favorite celebration • Most memorable holiday • First fight • Best thing you have done for someone • Worst thing you have done to someone • Best athletic moment • First love • Proudest moment
