What is MUN? It is a system of student conferences: • imitating the real United Nations Organisation; • organised for students and run by students; • held in schools and universities worldwide; • lasting for 1,2,3 or more days; • working in English.
You will be a member of a team. Together with eight or nine school friends, your team will represent one of these UN members or observers: The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland The Islamic Republic of Iran The Commonwealth of Australia The United States of America The Islamic Republic Of Pakistan The People’s Republic of China The Republic of Ireland The Kingdom of Belgium The Kingdom of Denmark The Republic of Costa Rica The Republic of Croatia The Republic of Panama Which country you represent, is decided before the conference starts. Either you or one of your team-mates will be the AMBASSADOR for this country AMBASSADOR
What do we doat a conference? In teams, we work in committees and we : • research important problems for the country we represent (it is never our own country); • ask the United Nations to improve our country and the world; • help the UN to help other countries and create a better world for the future.
What are these committees ? At our conference, these are: The Security Council The Disarmament Committee The Environment Committee The Human Rights Committee The Political Affairs Committee The Social Affairs Committee The Territorial Disputes Committee with a Special Conference on Discrimination They are groups of UN membercountries that specialise in dealing with a certain kind of problem. ALL THE COMMITTEES MEET AT THE END OF THE CONFERENCE IN A GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO DEBATE THE MOST SERIOUS ISSUES TOGETHER
What do we learn? • To research and understand important world problems; • To write and deliver speeches; • To write formal proposals for getting good ideas to work; • To work with new friends in teams; • To debate in English; • To think on our feet and respond to challenges fast; • To come to agreements by voting and accepting majority decisions.
