The United Nations The United Nations aims to unite the global community with a focus on the well being of all people The UN is NOT a world government The UN addresses issues such as: poverty, starvation, disease, oppression, and environmental threats More international law has been developed through the UN in the past 5 decades than in the entire previous history of mankind
The UN Charter • Ratified on October 24, 1945 • Establishes the conditions for membership • Sets fundamental rights and principles for all member states • Lays out purpose and structure of the UN • The Charter does not give authority to defy member state sovereignty • In fact… Sovereignty is perhaps the most respected and protected right of the United Nations
Structure and Function • General Assembly (GA) • All member states are represented • Main deliberative body • 1st committee—Disarmament and International Security • 2nd committee—Economic and Financial • 3rd committee—Social, Humanitarian and Cultural • 4th committee—Special Political and Decolonization • 5th committee—Administrative and Budget • 6thcommittee—Legal • Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) • Coordinates economic and social efforts between the UN and other agencies/institutions • 54 members elected for three year terms • Resolutions are in the form of policy recommendations on social, cultural, educational, health, and related matters
Structure and Function • Security Council (SC) • Charged with maintenance of international peace and security • Made up of 5 permanent members (China, France, Russian Federation, United Kingdom, and United States) and ten rotating members • Permanent members have veto ability for any action of the SC • The Security Council is the only UN organ that can demand actions from the member states • Trusteeship Council • Oversees the administration of the Trusteeship system • Now somewhat obsolete because all Trust Territories have gained independence or self-governance
Structure and Function • International Court of Justice (ICJ) • Principal international judicial body • Rulings based on international conventions and treaties, international custom, general principles of law, and judicial decisions and teachings • 15 judges; 9 year terms; elected by the general assembly • Secretariat • International staff which conducts administration of the Organization • Secretary-General (SG) acts as the main spokesperson, diplomat, and activist of the UN
MUN Conferences • At MUN Conferences delegates represent a member state of the UN and debate international issues with students from other colleges. • Delegates act in one of the main bodies of the UN, most frequently in the Security Council, ECOSOC, or General Assembly • At conferences, delegates will: • Give Speeches • Participate in Caucusing • Construct Resolutions • Research Country Position • Craft a Position Paper
