Dear Brethren, I once heard a “Master Mason” make the following query of a newly initiated Entered Apprentice Mason, “Where did you first become a Mason?” The Entered Apprentice Mason, still reeling from the euphoria of his initiatic experience, shrugged his shoulders and sheepishly replied, “Dunno… where?” The “Master Mason”, seeking to capitalize on the naiveté of the newly initiated Entered Apprentice’s impressionable mind, immediately declared, “In YOUR HEART!” Now, brethren, I would be remiss in my duties as a Master Mason if I did not point out that this “Master Mason” is absolutely, irrefutably, undeniably, unmistakably, entirely, totally and completely wrong. But why? How can that be? Isn’t that what being a Mason is all about? Well... hmmm... lemmee see... how to put this delicately? NO!!! So, you’re probably wondering why. Well, brethren, the answer is quite simple and can be found, ironically enough, in the very same passage of Masonic ritual our dearly beloved Brother (“Master Mason”) erroneously quoted our newly initiated E.A., and is as follows: Examiner: “Where were you first prepared to be made a Mason?” Candidate: “In my heart.” You see, brethren, a man/candidate is ONLYfirst prepared to be made a Mason in his “heart” and at no point in time during the exchange is the candidate EVER given the impression by the examiner that he has BECOMEANYTHING, let alone a Mason. Simply put, brethren, becoming a Mason and being first preparedto be made a Masonare two entirely different things. The former requires proper instruction (Masonic ritual) and inner work; the latter does NOT. Now, with that being said, let’s get straight to the “heart” of the matter. The “heart”, brethren, as it is used throughout the Mysteries of our noble Craft, is meant to be understood in its exoteric (belonging to the outer or less initiate circle) sense. Meaning to say, the “heart”, as it is employed throughout the language, culture and consciousness of the Craft is meant to be understood as the literal representation of the emotional nature/passions of man. And brethren, if you've taken anything away from Masonic initiation rituals (proper instruction), it is the emphasis and importance placed on the circumscription of desires and keeping of passions (the “heart”) within due bounds with all mankind especially the brethren. Now, in light of this empirical fact, let us revisit the erroneous query made of our newly initiated Entered Apprentice Mason by our ill-informed, but dearly beloved Brother (“Master Mason”)… “ Where did you first become a Mason?” To which the appropriate response, if thereISto be ANY response at all, is… “In a Regular and Duly Constituted Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons.” Why? You might ask. EUCLID MASONIC CLUB ASSOCIATION OF HOBOKEN INC.akaEUCLID MASONIC CLUBTRUSTEESINCORPORATED – 1916 Harry M. Maisch, Jr., PM……..…………….…..…. 1 Year (201) 288-0292Donald E. Because it is ONLY and I mean ONLY in a Regular and Duly Constituted Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons that a man/candidate, in darkness (profane), as regards the Secrets of Freemasonry, is afforded the proper instruction (Masonic initiation ritual/light) necessary to enable him to, via a purposeful application of the lessons learned therein, overcome the lesser impulses (emotional nature/passions/ the “heart") of his base nature and repurpose them toward the achievement of a higher/more refined state of being. A process of inner work (transmutation), brethren, that if diligently pursued by a man/candidate, will confer upon him, as a result of his unwavering dedication and steadfast efforts, the honorary distinction of BEING MADEa Mason. So, you see, brethren, it is ONLY in a Regular and Duly Constituted Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons via a meaningful employment and proper application of Masonic initiation ritual (proper instruction), NOTthe "heart", that a man/candidate BECOMES a Mason. But perhaps even more poignant, brethren, if we AREto take anything away from this message, let it be that Masonic initiation ritual (proper instruction) separates the profane/prepared from the initiated/made. But perhaps even more to the point, brethren, if we AREto take anything away from this message, let it be that Masonic initiation ritual (proper instruction), when meaningfully employed and purposefully applied, separates the MEN from the “boys”.
