Bob Arnkil, lead expert Talking’ ‘bout MY GENERATION Thoughts on the Rotterdam Youth Event & Outreach GLASGOW MAY2009
When asked what are the disconnections in their cities, the young brought up disconnections between the young (gangs etc.) and between the young and adults, lack of understanding, opportunities… • When asked what to do with disconnections lot of mention was made about cultural activities, local, tailored, focussed efforts, with giving the young a real role and opportunities
So the ”cognitive message” was by no means radical, but the Rotterdam event was radical in another sense: It really was a transformation of a ”learning space” • ”Doing/living what you are preaching” • Not just talking about reaching out but reaching out = connecting • Not just talking about being multicultural, but being multicultural • Not just talking that we should work in ways young can relate to, but working in ways young relate to (multimodal, music, picture, dance, performance…) • Not just talking about doing – DOING!
For me the message from Rotterdam was: • Transform your ”learning spaces”: • Enrich your connections (the quality of your ”social field”) = invite new people, establish new/ better connections • Transform your learning spaces: get people to connect, use different modes, give thought to the quality of your space: physical, psychological, social… • Get meaningful results on the short term • Build on that to sustain your new activity
ENRICHING THE QUALITY OF YOUR SOCIAL FIELD = NEW CONNECT-IONS TRANS-FORMING YOUR ”ECOSYSTEM OF KNOWLEDGE” = LEARNING SPACES TRANS-FORMING YOUR ACTIONS IN THE SHORT TERM = ”PROMISING GOOD PRACTICE” SUSTAINING YOUR ACTIONS = GOOD PRACTICE/NEW AGENCY
