Abrasion Sand, pebbles and rocks are carried along by the river and rub the banks and bed of the channel, wearing it away. (click on box to demonstrate) Attrition Rocks and pebbles knock against each other in the moving water and become smoother and rounder. (click on box to demonstrate)
Erosional landforms at headlands How will erosion change this feature in the future? Stage 1 Cracks in the rock are opened out by hydraulic action and weathering. Durdle Door, Dorset Stage 3 The cave breaks through the headland to form an arch. The first arch collapses to leave a stack. Stage 4 The stack is eroded down to form a stump and a new stack is formed. Stage 2 A cave develops from the cracks and the arch gets larger.
