Air abrasion technology For easy teeth filling
What is air abrasion? • A new technology which comes in handy when filling teeth. This technology can replace the drill in certain situations, ex. when a tooth is in the early stages of decay or has slight decay. Dentists’ drill – everybody’s worst nightmare
How does it work? It uses an instrument which works like a mini sandblaster, aiming a very thin stream of aluminum oxide particles at the decayed parts of teeth. Compressed air propels these particles toward the tooth surface. This action sprays away decay from the surface of teeth, which is then sucked out. The instrumentdoesn’t create any heat, sound, pressure or vibration, a reason for its popularity.
Advantages of air abrasion over traditional drills • Reduced need for anaesthesia, especially when the tooth cavity is shallow. • Leaves more of the healthy tooth tissue behind. • Leaves the working area relatively dry, which is helpful when placing composite fillings. • Reduced risk of microfracturing and chipping of the tooth, which some believe can lead to premature restorative failures. • Allows dentists to treat multiple sites in the mouth during a single visit. • Procedure is relatively simple and quick.
