  4. Why study here? • English-speaking countries and multicultural societies • Built in 9 month “gap” experience • Cost is more affordable than other countries • international students can often work on a student visa • Usually 3-year program of study • Strong standings in world rankings of research universities • Wide range of research universities to practical courses • ex: TAFEs in Oz or Polytechnics in NZ

  5. Entry Requirements • Prefer IB Diploma, but also possible to enter with a High School Diploma and scores from SAT • ATAR conversion • For accommodation, may require a teacher recommendation

Application Process • Course – must choose what you want to study • English proficiency – if not IB English A, then IELTS or TOEFL is required (alsofor immigration) • Australia - Apply through the tertiary admissions centre (TAC) in the state in which you plan to study • UAC, VTAC, QTAC, etc. • Some Aussie unis moving towards more general education in first year – to help retain students • In future, will probably move to a centralized TAC • Rank your course choices • New Zealand – Apply directly to each institution. • Lower scores for course entry, but then must study very hard to stay in the course after first year • Deadlines – • Applications open in September • February start of term

Advice from WAB families • Keep an open mind, especially when returning to your home country • Bureaucracy may be a challenge to navigate • Try to reach someone by phone who understands your situation: “domestic Australian applicant with international qualifications, applying from overseas” • Then keep all of their contact details!! • Accommodation is very difficult to get, start early! • before you apply • Important: which city, lifestyle do you want? • Think carefully about your “gap” semester
