The Persuasive Speech By Ms. Coté LMAC 2012
Your Purpose? What is the overall goal of “Persuasive Speaking?” • To convince your audience • To incite them to action • To present an opinion via evidence
Where to Start? Start with a question… A question of fact: • Persuade your audience that one thing or another is a fact. e.g: “Ten years from now, climate change will be our most serious problem.”
Where to Start? A question of policy: • Persuade your audience to take action. e.g.: “Our oil supply is running out, and we need to take preventative action now.”
Where to Start? A question of value: • Persuade your audience that something is good or bad, evil or humane. E.g.: “We can no longer ignore the rise in poverty, it is inhumane and unfair.”
The Three Elements Logos: • The logic of an argument • The argument has to make sense • It has to be logical, well supported, and within the realm of the audience’s experience
The Three Elements Pathos: • The emotion of an argument – it should appeal to the emotions of the audience. • Your arguments should be supported with concrete examples to show the audience that the speech can directly relate to them, or people like them.
The Three Elements Ethos: • The credibility of the speaker • The speaker needs to be believable, credible, charismatic and trusted by the audience.
Your Assignment… Should you choose to accept it…
Your Task: • You will be presenting a persuasive speech to the class (4 minutes) • Of course your topic is CURRENT, RELEVANT and DEBATABLE. • Keeping in mind “logos, pathos, ethos.” • You may use the first person, expressions, colloquialisms, modern references, humour, etc.
Your Task: • CUE CARDS only. • Practice your speech in front of a mirror and for others for timing. • Know your speech well enough so that all you need are cue cards to guide you through. • Do not bring up your entire speech - READING your persuasive essay will result in a failing grade.
Rubric – Persuasive Speech C-1: Applies rhetorical strategies in a persuasive text.
Evaluation: • You will be evaluated by myself AND the class. • If the class gives you the same mark as me, you get and extra + • This is why you want to be present the day of your speech.
