  3. TO STUDY A FOREIGN LANGUAGE REQUIRES A LOT OF COMMITMENT • Learning as a lifelong experience. • Trying it out in all different modalities: orally, reading, writing, listening. • Following the Standards for Foreign Languages: Communication, Culture, Connections, Comparison, Communities.

  4. HOW DO STUDENTS BECOME PROFICIENT IN ANOTHER LANGUAGE? • Starting early in life. • Being exposed to it on an everyday basis. • Following the Standards for Foreign Language, especially Communication.

  5. COULD IT BE CONFUSING LEARNING ENGLISH AND A FOREIGN LANGUAGE AT THE SAME TIME? • Children are able to easily differentiate their own language from the foreign language.

  6. WHY IS LEARNING EARLY BETTER? • Our brains adapt and absorb it more easily. • Younger students are much more able to cope with not fully understanding everything. • The level of fluency is more likely to be higher than those who start later.

  7. SUMMER IMMERSION SPANISH CAMP • 1ST year: Kindergarten and 1st grade. • 2ND year: Second grade.

  8. WHAT ARE THE TECHNIQUES? • Total Physical Response. • Visual aids. • Acting out songs, rhymes. • Games. • Puppet theater. • Follow a routine.

  9. IS THERE SOMETHING ELSE INVOLVED? • Teaching of culture • Trying to embed the standards for foreign language education.

  10. HOW CAN WE AS A COMMUNITY ACHIEVE SECOND LANGUAGE FLUENCY? • Having a world language beginning in the Elementary school years. • Cultivating continuity. • Dedicating adequate resources to foreign language.
