The Humble ISD Total Immersion Model The percentage for each grade will be: • 1st Grade: 90% Spanish (Reading and Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies) - 10% English (Specials). • 2nd Grade: 90% Spanish (Reading and Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies) - 10% English (Specials). • 3rd Grade: 70% Spanish (Reading and Language Arts, Science and Social Studies) - 30% English (Math and Specials). • 4th Grade: 60% Spanish (Reading and Science) - 40% English (Language Arts, Math and Specials). • 5th Grade: 50% Spanish (Reading and Language Arts, and Social Studies) - 50% English (Math, Science, and Specials).
Proficiency Levels Attained for Speaking, as Expected in Extended, Uninterrupted Learning Sequences

Commitment • Students zoned to the Kingwood area will attend Bear Branch Elementary • Students zoned to the Atascocita, Humble, Summerwood and Fall Creek will attend Pine Forest Elementary • Transportation will NOT be provided • Parents will sign a 5 year commitment to the Spanish Immersion Program
What do I need to do as a parent? Parents need to: Read in English every night at home to establish a good foundation for English reading and writing skills. This includes: helping with daily language homework (spelling and/or grammar). Encourage your child by telling him or her how proud you are that he or she is learning a second language.
Do I need to speak Spanish? • Parents do not need to speak Spanish at home • Homework will be in English and any work brought home in Spanish (eg. small book) will be for independent practice.
What does homework look like for SIP students? • In primary grades students will receive a weekly homework packet. This may include: Grammar, reading and comprehension, Writing and/OR Math • Spelling words both in English and Spanish • Homework may differ from grade level and students may be given work to reinforce concepts learned in the class
STAAR Testing • Students will be taking the STAAR test in English • All District Based Assessments will also be in English

Is my child a good “FIT” for SIP? • Students who exhibit an enthusiasm for learning • Students who are reading at an independent level 6 by the second week in May will be considered… • Conference with your child’s Kindergarten teacher… (listen to them)
What about middle school? We currently offer a continuation of Spanish immersion education at Creekwood Middle School through an accelerated Spanish program 6th grade – Enhanced Spanish 1 7th grade – Enhanced Spanish 2 8th grade – Spanish 3
How to apply for the Spanish Immersion program • Registration for immersion students will be from February 26th, 2013 to March 27th, 2013 at 3:30 p.m. • All applications must be returned to the front office at Bear Branch or Pine Forest Elementary. There is a 5 year commitment to the program • If more applications are received than positions available, there will be a lottery to determine actual participation • Kinder students of the hosting school (BBE/PFE) will have preference • Kinder students that reside in (BBE/PFE) will be considered next • The final tier will students that are from out of the BBE/PFE attendance zones • You will be notified of your child’s acceptance into the program the last week in May.
