History of Metrology in The Netherlands • 1820; Metric System in The Netherlands • 1873; Centralized Legal Metrology Organization • 1875; Meter Convention signed in Paris • 1960; Introduction of SI units • 1967; NMi realisation of range of physical standards • 1978; NMi laboratories established in Delft
NMi background • Total 290 staff • Formerly a department of Ministry of Economic Affairs (MEA) • 1989; new corporate structure (MEA holds 100% shares), NMi independent position • 2001; all shares transferred from MEA towards TNO • NMi is embedded as separate independent entity in the TNO organisation • TNO is an independent organisation with 5000 staff • TNO is a knowledge based organisation providing research, development and application of new technologies
