  1. We talked about Thai literature and Phra Aphai Mani. Do you still remember what we did last time.

  2. Sure! There was a city called Rattana. King Suthat ruled the city. We also drew a picture of Sin Samutr in Class. Remember? Oh, yes. But can you go over the story?

  3. The king was angry when the two princes went out to learn how to play music and sword-fighting. King Suthat and his queen, Nang Prathum Kesorn had two young and very handsome sons, Phra Aphai Mani and Sri Suvarn. He drove them out of the kingdom, so the young princes walked into the wilderness.

  4. When they reached the sea coast, they met three Brahmins and became friends. Aphai Mani showed the Brahmins how his music could be of any use by playing his pipe. Then the three Brahmins, including Sri Suvarn, all fell asleep.

  5. A giantess heard the music and was unable to resist the spell. Seeing the handsome prince on the shore, she fell in love with him at first sight. She picked him up and took her to her cave under the water Aphai Mani was forced to take the giantess as his wife. They lived together and later the giantess gave birth to a son, Sin Samutr.

  20. One day, while the giantess was away hunting fish, Sin Samutr went playing outside the cave. He saw a merman. So he seized his tail, and dragged him into the cave to show this father. Phra Aphai Mani told his son to set the merman free. Feeling grateful to the prince, the merman offered to help him to escape from the giantess. Please continue telling the story. I’ll do that now.

  21. Next morning, Phisua Samutr went to a high mountain for meditation. As soon as she was gone, Phra Aphai Mani and Sin Samutr escaped from the cave with the help from the merman, his wife and his daughter. They had swum in the sea for more than three days before the giantess discovered that her husband and son had escaped. You can’t enter my island, you ugly giant! Mercy, please, Mommy! When she caught up with them, she killed the merman and his wife. The young mermaid was safe and she took Phra Aphai Mani on her back and swam away. Fortunatelythey arrived safely at a magic island where a holy hermit lived.

  22. Phra Aphai Mani, Sin Samutr and the mermaid lived on at the island. They performed services for the hermit. As the days passed, Phra Aphai Mani became attractedtowards the mermaid. After all, she had saved his life, and he pitiedher for the loss of her parents. He therefore asked her to become his wife. The unionof Phra Aphai Mani and the mermaid was a happy one. I feel sorry for the mermaid. Seven brief months passed. It was precisely at this time that the ship of the king of a neighboring country arrived at the island. This king had a beautiful daughter called Suvarnamali.

  23. Please give this ring to our child. I’ll return soon. As time went by, Sin Samutr noticed that his father was attracted to Princess Suvarnamali. He helped his father by asking the princess to accept him as her son. Suvarnamali loved the little boy very much, so she agreed to be his mother. In fact, she also fell in love with Phra Aphai Mani. Later Phra Aphai Mani and Sin Samutr decided to leave the island. They all said goodbye to the hermit. Then Phra Aphai Mani went down to the beach to say goodbye to the mermaid. He gave her a ring, telling her to give it to their child. Phra Aphai Mani and the mermaid then parted in a tearful farewell. I’ll always love you.
