CNAP NEWS • Robin Tasker gave a presentation on Network Monitoring.http://gridmon.dl.ac.uk/gridmon/ measures packet loss, RTT, estimates jitter, TCP throughput and UPD throughput to e-science centres and selected HEP sites. This is end-to-end monitoring to reflect end user performance.http://gridmon.dl.ac.uk/gridmon/host_requirements.htmlr.tasker@dl.ac.ukm.j.leese@dl.ac.uk • Andrew Sansum gave a talk on FirewallsScanning rate is 100’s /min. Limit protocols, and hosts, logs unauthorized activity, Does NOT protect from security vulnerabilities in authorized protocols. Some protocols firewall unfriendly going from httpd, gridftp, bbftp. Users need to work closely with network support. • Pete Clarke gave an update from PPNCGNational and Intnl backbone v.good. Projects: monitoring, TCP Throughput, Bandwidth Document, No FTE funding is a problem. PPNCG has v.good relations with Networks, MB-NG, UKLIGHT, WP7 High Throughput Achievement
CNAP News 2 • Question of funding of sysman posts. All new grant proposals should include statements about sysman effort required. PPARC need to know what man power is required over the length of the LHC project, including an overview of what is needed over and above current levels. Griddpp could fund sysman effort specifically from gridpp work but not general support. • AS&SG (Astronomy Software and Services Group) Demands of ESO have reduced funds available for the rest of the budget. Some posts will be lost. 6 Staff years at RAL and maybe one software programmer elsewhere.Concerns were raised about how this had been dealt with and CNAP will ask PPARC to find transition funding to ensure vital expertise is not lost. • Janet Video Conferencing H323 service will be tested by Bristol.
