  1. HEP SYSMANAutumn MeetingTheme: Farm/Cluster Management 26th November 2002 UCL

  2. HEPSYSMAN • Welcome; Thanks to Rob Henderson. • Propose to keep two meetings a year One Day in Autumn (~20 )Two Day at Easter (~30 ) • Welcome to John Sherman and John Deacon; Astro system managers. • I attended the Astro Sys Man meeting 28.10.02 • Thanks to Bob Cranfield for providing the venue. • Announce new Deputy Chairman.

  3. P.M.Watkins Birmingham Chairman T.Naylor Exeter Astronomy Representative D.Bailey Bristol Particle Physics Rep. C.Page Leicester AstroGrid Representative D.Britton IC GridPP Representative P.Gronbech Oxford HEP Sys Man Chairman J.Sherman CLRC Starlink Managers Chair P.Clarke UCL PPNCG Chairman B.M.Barnett CLRC Secretary N.Geddes/G.Rickett PPARC In attendance CNAP Membership

  4. CNAP NEWS • Most backbone network currently empty makes it difficult to justify case for 80gbps backbone, so USE IT! • Some tests are going on to do large transfers but bottlenecks appear to be at the ends rather than the back bone so far. • Network charging will be based on Institutional Income and not volume in next round. • Site licences arranged for Astro PPARC users for IDL/MatLab would that be useful to Particle Physics? • PDG raised concerns about ever increasing load on Sys admins. He said there is some feeling that the need for full time sys admins not fully appreciated by PPARC. Many sys admins also work on projects.

  5. CNAP News 2 Form G shows increasing no’s of desktops and farms, 200% and 992% compared with 10-13% increase in sysman effort from 2000 to 2002. The extract from the ‘Annual Report of CNAP 2001/2002’ below commented on those statistics: Comparison with similar returns in 2000 show a modest increase in the number of desktops with a doubling of their power in line with Moore’s Law and a massive increase in computing farm numbers and power. The striking thing from this comparison is that although System Manager effort has increased marginally, it has not even kept pace with the increase in the number of desktops let alone the huge amount of new computing farm equipment. This supports comments made by the Sysman Group below and anecdotal evidence of hugely increased loads on System Managers. Should it be extended to cover Astro?

  6. Astro • Form G • The question of introducing Form G to the Astro groups was discussed at their sysman meeting. • They felt it was too vague, did not easily differentiate between, Large SMP, cluster, laptops and normal desktops. Should use spec int 2000. • Suspicious about what it would be used for. • They have many more (generally smaller) grants that come in at different times of year so the timing of when to fill a form G out is less obvious. • Linux supplier • All use Red Hat 7.x currently • some doubts about direction Red Hat is going, should they change?
