  2. Arthur Clip Spelling Trouble • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z44ovdYVsls

  3. Kohlberg • Kohlberg would say that the characters are within the levels of pre-conventional stage 2 and conventional stage 3. • First, the students express individualism as they behave according to personal interest. While The Brain studies hard through the episode, Arthur did not study very hard for the class test, but did before he competed in the school wide Spell-a-thon. • Next, there is also evidence of “Good boy/girl” as Arthur thinks about performing in front of the entire school with his friends and family watching. This propelled him to feel nervous and work hard to do well in the competition.

  4. Erickson • Erikson would say the Arthur characters are in two stages Initiative vs. Guilt and Industry vs. Inferiority. • In particular, Arthur is struck in the Initiative vs. Guilt stage because of his dissatisfaction in his spelling abilities. Over the course of the episode, Arthur improves his spelling and he is able to move on from that stage. • Most of Arthur’s friends are within the stage of Industry vs. Inferiority. This is evident in the students preparing different study strategies. Also, schools and friends are influencing those decisions as the students are figuring out what works best for them and what does not.

  5. Gardner • Gardner: Many multiple intelligences are on display as they studied for the class test. Buster raises the question if are good spellers are born or through hard work. • Linguistic- Auditory learning, spelling aloud • Musical-The Aardvark song • Interpersonal- the relationships with family members • Intrapersonal- Independent Study, Tree house, alone in Arthur’s room

  6. What else struck us • What we noticed was when we broke down this clip was how much the theorists overlap in education, even on the scale of a single episode of this children’s show. It illustrates how connected they all are and how similar their ideas are as they play out in real life action whether through a type of media or not. • We also notice how Prunella acted more selfish and snobby compared to the other characters. This could have been because she was a former champion and was an older peer. Going a bit deeper, it is possible her moral development in terms of relationships with others needs to progress further. Others could perceive her in a negative light and it could hinder her in forming relationships in adulthood.
