AMERICAN WOODCOCK CONSERVATION PLAN • Short-term Goal: Stop Decline • Long-term Goal: Return to 1970 Densities • Northern Forest Initiative: Implementation Strategy

Changes in American Woodcock Density by BCR Unpublished Singing Ground Survey Data: John Sauer, USGS
Woodcock Initiative Approach • Showcase Best Management Practices on Public Land Demonstration Areas • Monitor Response of Woodcock to Management • Outreach to Private Landowners • Provide Technical Assistance & Funding
Young Forest and Shrubland Guild • New England Wildlife Action Plans identify 58 species of Greatest Conservation Need that require young forest and shrubland habitats • Woodcock focus species representing young forest and shrubland habitat guild
Context: Things that trump young forests and shrublands • Unfragmented forests • Forests of significant ecological value • Special/essential wildlife habitats • High elevation forests • Water quality concerns in ripairan zone management • Heritage sites • Proximate development • Existing young forest occurrence > goal
Woodcock Best Management Practices • Assumption that occurrence of young forest and shrubland will not equal historical occurrence • Therefore, woodcock density on young forest and shrubland habitats must be higher to meet goals • Metapopulation approach
Woodcock Initiative Progress to Date • Team Assembled • Gary Donovan, IP: Habitat Coordinator • Dan McAuley, USGS: Research/Monitoring Coordinator • Approach Fine Tuning • Site Visits & Discussions with Managers & Private Landowners • Fundraising
