Who were the Knights Templar? • Within two decades of the victory of the first crusade (1095-1099) a group of knights led by Hugues de Payens offered themselves to the Patriarch of Jerusalem to serve as a military force. • This group often said to be nine in number had the mandate of protecting Christian pilgrims who were en route to the Holy Land to visit the shrines sacred to their faith. • At that time the Church was very supportive of the Knights. Their properties were exempt from taxes were heaped all kinds of favors, not subject to jurisdiction and did not even have to pay church tithes so common at that time.

Accusations • On Friday, October 13, 1307 King Philip IV of France ordered de Molay and scores of other French Templar’s to be simultaneously arrested. • They were charged with numerous offenses (including apostasy, idolatry, heresy, obscene rituals and homosexuality, financial corruption and fraud, and secrecy). • Many of them confessed to these charges under torture
Pope Clement called for papal hearings to determine the Templar’s guilt or innocence, and once freed of the Inquisitors' torture, many Templar’s recanted their confessions. Some had sufficient legal experience to defend themselves in the trails, but in 1310 Philip blocked this attempt, using the previously forced confessions to have dozens of Templar’s burned at the stake in Paris.

The Seal of the knights The reverse of the traditional seal (down left) depicted the dome of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, although many have erroneously claimed that it is the Dome of the Rock. The image on the right shows the seal of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
