Local Xeriscaping Project • The Challenge: • There is leftover money in construction budget to plan, design, and construct a school “park” area between the school and the track. • There is limited money for water, so design the area with “native” plant and vegetation. • Think about local community usage. What would they want? Park? Skate park? Playground? • Your plan must be neat, complete, colorful, and must demonstrate a unique and interesting design. You will present to the class on Thurs. • Look at examples online: xeriscaping plans, southern colorado native plants, low water vegetation.
About Xeriscaping • Xeriscaping means using native and adapted plants which grow and sustain themselves with low water requirements, and that can tolerate heat and drought conditions. The advantages of Xeriscaping include: • Cost savings on water bills. • Conservation of diminishing water resources during drought periods. • Prevention of pollution of surface and ground water from environmentally harmful runoff. • Reduced yard maintenance requirements. • Reduced need for costly fertilizers and pesticides. • Attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and other wildlife into your yard. • Pride in knowing you are doing something substantial to protect and beautify our community.

Your 2 minutes presentation will include: • Poster of area with key • Explanations of key features • Explanations of vegetation choices • Explanations of architecture and design elements • Any other interesting features • Bring posterboard and glue sticks on Monday
Scale Model of classroom • Using a meter stick, construct a scale model diagram of this room. • You cannot move anything, but you can measure everything. • Draw your diagram on a piece of .25 graph paper. • Scale: 1 foot = .25inch (1 sq. foot = 1 sq) • You may work with A (one) partner if you choose. • Neat, complete, precise, straight lines, labeled, title, location
Your Ultimate Dream House • What would your ultimate dream home look like? • How big? How many rooms? • Kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms, living room, family room, dining room, garage(s), play areas, etc. • What does the outside look like? • What design features will make your house “environmentally friendly” and “carbon conscious” • Sketch, then draw a blueprint. (straight, neat, complete, scale, dimensions, cabinets, closets, water fixtures.) • Present your “house” _____________.
Step 2: Redraw the sketch as a blueprint. Make sure the SCALE is correct. Use Graph paper! 1 sq cm = 1 sq meter (1 meter = 3 feet)
Step 3: Translate your plans into a 3-D design built from poster board. (Assume your walls are 9ft tall = 3 cm)
