Guided NOtes • Review from Yesterday • What is Stress? • What causes stress? • Stressors (+)(-) Eustress/Distress • Homeostasis (Psychological,Environmental, Social, Physiological • Level 1: The Alarm Stage (Fight or Flight) • 1. Increase in heart rate • 2.increase in blood pressure • 3. Elevation in blood sugar • 4. Increase in muscle tension/perspiration • 5. Sharpening of senses • 6. Digestion slows down

  4. Guided Notes • The Body’s Reaction to Stress Continued • Level 2: The Resistance Stage: • During the resistance stage, the body attempts to adjust to the stressors and return to normal. The heart rate and respiration rate decrease and hormones are secreted which give the body the energy to cope with the stressor. • Example: Your tying to calm yourself down from an altercation from a student in the hallway or on the bus, or if your parents get you upset

  5. Guided Notes • The Bodies reaction to Stress continued • Level 3: The Exhaustion Stage: • The third stage of stress is the exhaustion stage and may lead to disease. Prolonged stress can affect the body in a number of ways. If stress continues long enough, and your body cannot cope with it, you can suffer from short-term and or long-term effects. • Example: Depression, Anxiety attacks, internal illnesses, Ulcers.

  6. Guided NOtes • The Effects of Stress on the Body: • Short Term Stress includes symptoms such as headaches, diarrhea, dizziness, and fatigue. All of these symptoms usually disappear once the stress level decreases • Long Term Stress , occurring over weeks or even years, may affect the heart, blood pressure, stomach, muscles and joints, and may cause severe headaches, depression, and fatigue. Long Term stress may also lead to weight control issues, tobacco use and drug use.

Factors which may determine if a person becomes sick as a result of stress, include: • The number of stressful events • The severity of stressful events • How the person perceives the stressful events • How the person responds to the stressful events • How the person copes with the stressful events
