  1. Pavement Preservation and Design: An Overview USDOT UTC Introduction to Highway Pavement Preservation (CHPP)

  2. Overview • Civil Engineering • Transportation and Pavement Engineering • Sustainability and Preservation Concepts in Asphalt Pavements • Testing Pavement • Deflection • Your Engineering Challenge

  3. CIVIL ENGINEERING Civil engineers work on projects that touch nearly all facets of every day life • the buildings we live and work in • the network of transportation, water and power systems that support modern life and business • and projects we use to sustain and repair the environment that we all share

  4. Civil Engineering Departments • Structural Engineering • Transportation Engineering • Pavement Engineering • Geotechnical Engineering • Construction Engineering • Hydraulics & Water Resources • Environmental Engineering

  5. Transportation Engineering Transportation Engineers apply scientific principles to planning, design, construction, operation, & management of transportation systems.

  6. Transportation Engineering Design, operate, manage… AIRPORTS AND RUNWAYS ROADWAYS PORTS AND TERMINALS

  7. Pavement Engineering Pavement Engineers apply scientific principles to planning, design, construction, operation, & management of systems requiring pavement.

  8. Pavement Engineering Design, analyze, create… PAVEMENT DESIGN MATERIAL TECHNOLOGY

  9. Transportation and Pavement Engineering Need to know: • Mathematics • Physics • Mechanics • Statistics and Probability • Computer Programming Always be concerned about environmental impacts!

  10. SUSTAINABILITY AND PRESERVATION CONCEPTS IN ASPHALT PAVEMENTS • https://www.dropbox.com/s/vtde8p9qt1tyaan/CPAR%20Video.mp4

  11. Concepts of Sustainability for Asphalt Pavements • Longevity, increase service life • Minimize long-term environmental effects • Reduced greenhouse emissions (e.g., CO2) • Reduced use of raw materials • Recycled asphalt pavements • Increased use of recycled materials • Increased use of industrial by-products • Crumb (tire) rubber modified asphalt

  12. The Premise: Reduce the impact at the production level Less energy used during production = Less impact on the environment

  13. Recycling Existing Asphalt Pavements • Every year, about 100 million tons of pavement material is reclaimed, and about 95 percent of the total is returned to use in roads and highways. • This makes asphalt pavement America’s most recycled material.

  14. Crumb Rubber Modified HMA Pavements • Ground tire rubber + asphalt + aggregates • Asphalt rubber is the largest single market for ground rubber in the United States, • consuming an estimated 220 million pounds, or approximately 12 million tires annually.

  15. Design Constraints in Pavement Design COST TIME MATERIALS

  16. Testing Pavement What qualities make pavement “good”? What do you want to test to see if pavement is “good”?

  17. Deflection • How much something changes when a force (or load) is applied to it • Goal for engineers: minimize deflection on pavement

  18. Deflection How do you measure it? SENSORS! One type of sensor: Piezoelectric Film Transducer as a Sensor Wires connected to piezo

  19. Your Engineering Challenge APPLY what you have learned about sustainability in asphalt design to DESIGN, BUILD, and TEST a sample of pavement

  20. Your Engineering Challenge • GOAL: LEAST amount of deflection (measured with piezo and oscilloscope) • COST: LEAST amount of cost (you will calculate this) • TIME: Must finish production and testing before the end of this session • MATERIALS: You can only use what is provided for your group

  21. Your Engineering Challenge: Helpful Hints • Use the JB Weld glue to glue the piezo onto the top layer FIRST (it takes about 10 min to dry) • You can mix any supply with any other supply. • Make sure to compact their layers • Water can be added to any layer, but you do not want it to “float” • The Geogrid is generally used after the first layer

  22. Your Engineering Challenge: Measurements How you will measure… DEFLECTION: - Piezo - Oscilloscope - Applied force (weight) dropped from specific height COST: - Calculate the amount of money it costs to build your sample using the values on the next slide

  23. Cost of Materials
