  1. …And Now… The Witch Winch:Building a Practical Gearbox By Benjamin Kidd ENGR-162/12 - Benjamin W. Kidd

  2. What is a Gearbox? • A box of gears • More specifically, an assembly to which a prime mover (such as a motor, gasoline engine, etc) is mounted to, and interconnects with gears for the purposes of speed and torque alterations (See Basic Practical Mechanics presentation) ENGR-162/12 - Benjamin W. Kidd

  3. What is a Winch? • A device used to wind a rope or cable for lifting or pulling. From http://www.ramsey.com/winches/ ENGR-162/12 - Benjamin W. Kidd

  4. Building a Gearbox - Materials DCM-216 All Electronics GR-5 All Electronics 270-1806 Radioshack It is recommended to purchase a project box instead of building one. Bottle Cap Coat Hanger ENGR-162/12 - Benjamin W. Kidd

  5. Building the Gearbox: The Pinion • Mount the pinion gear to the motor shaft – In the case of the DCM-216 and GR-5, the motor shaft must be built up to fit snugly with the gear. ENGR-162/12 - Benjamin W. Kidd

  6. Attaching the pinion • Epoxy the pinion gear to the motor (Use epoxy. Glue gun and super glue may not hold.) ENGR-162/12 - Benjamin W. Kidd

  7. The Gearbox • Mount the motor to the Gearbox using the front mounting screws. ENGR-162/12 - Benjamin W. Kidd

  8. Motor Mounting – Above View ENGR-162/12 - Benjamin W. Kidd

  9. Driven Gear Mounting • Use same procedure with driven gear as pinion – mount to coat hanger (or other material suitable to be used as a shaft.) ENGR-162/12 - Benjamin W. Kidd

  10. Driven Gear Mounting • Spindle added for “Winch” on driven gear shaft. ENGR-162/12 - Benjamin W. Kidd

  11. Gearbox ENGR-162/12 - Benjamin W. Kidd

  12. How fast does it wind a string? • To calculate, we need to know the number of times the winch shaft turns per unit time, and the circumference of the winch. ENGR-162/12 - Benjamin W. Kidd

  13. Calculating Shaft Speed • Assumptions • Motor RPM = 6000 RPM • Gearing Ratio 1:5 (pinion:gear) ENGR-162/12 - Benjamin W. Kidd

  14. Calculating Winding Time • Need Diameter of Winch Spindle • d = 3/8” • Find circumference • Now calculate winding time ENGR-162/12 - Benjamin W. Kidd

  15. Spindle Speed Table ENGR-162/12 - Benjamin W. Kidd
