Gender Identity VS Sexual Orientation • Not the same! • Sexual orientation covers sexual desires, feelings, practices and identification. Sexual orientation can be towards people of the same or different sexes (same-sex, heterosexual or bisexual orientation). • Gender identity refers to the complex relationship between sex and gender referring to a person’s experience of self expression in relation to social categories of masculinity or femininity (gender). A person’s subjectively felt gender identity may be at variance with their sex or physiological characteristics.

Risks • Youth 2x more likely to abuse alcohol • Youth 8x more likely to abuse cocaine or crack • 28% drop out of school due to bullying or harassment • Youth with family rejection are much more likely to report having attempted suicide, high levels of depression, illegal drug use and unprotected sex compared to those with little or no family rejection • 20-40% of all homeless youth identify as LGBTQ (Fostering Transitions)
