Sexual Identity • The majority identifies as “heterosexual” or “straight”. • People also identify as “homosexual”, “gay”, or “lesbian”. • Some identify as “bisexual”. • “Queer” or “Questioning”. • “Transgender”, “Intersex”, “Transvestite”, and “Transsexuals” are all also classed as sexual orientations.
Stages of Self- Identity • Realization of attraction • Exploration and experimentation with sexuality/relationships • Deciding and/or labeling your orientations • “Coming out”, telling others about your orientation • Developing pride in your orientation
Race, Ethnicity, and Religion • Racism in the LGBT community can make sexual identity even more difficult for minorities. • Religion or culture can cause some communities and even families to make LGBT outcasts, or try to “cure” them.
The Fight for Equality • New York bans “sexual perversion”. • Homosexuality banned in movie and music industry. • Writers and poets ignored bans and used gay references in writing. • Psychologists began studying homosexuality in the 1950s. • Demand for justice and equal rights constantly ignored.
Ignorance towards Sexuality • The Lavender Scare takes place in 1950s. • Government removes homosexuals until 1970s. • Dismissed from military duties in 1960s. • Jobs lost, arrested in bars, parks, theatres, and parties in their own homes. • Blame for demise of family unit. • Blame for HIV, AIDS, and an outbreak of pneumonia found in cancer patients.
Gay Rights Movement • Initiated on June 27, 1969. • Gay Liberation Front (GLF). • LGBT groups formed and began to grow in members. • National Gay Task Force and Lambda Legal Defense and Education fund was formed. • Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Policy • Hate Crime Statistics Act includes sexual orientation.
Continuing Challenges • Families, religious leaders, and teachers continue to reject homosexuality. • Legislation against adoption is being enacted in many states. • Students harassed and abused if they openly acknowledge sexuality. • Rights and benefits are not available to LGBTQ persons. • Denied access to partners hospital rooms and decision-making power.
