4. The computer’s cool light cast quiet shadows upon the man’s face. He had shut the blinds to block the invading light from the city. Through the glass walls of his office, he could see the dark expanse of space that made up the thirty-eighth floor of the building. He bent over to unlace the dress shoes that he had been wearing since the previous day’s morning. After he placed them on the floor next to him, he returned his attention to the ever-lengthening letter that he had been typing. The letter was too long. It was meandering, confused, and far from self-explanatory. He rested his head on his desk. He told himself that he would sit up in a moment and finish writing.
