GEOG 346: Day 27. Last Week. Earth Hour Results. Revelstoke did the best with a 12.1% reduction, followed by Pemberton at 6.8%. Ladysmith and North Cowichan had 5.8% and 4.8%, respect- ively . Nanaimo, at 2.6% beat out Vancouver and Victoria at 2.1% and 1.6%. Agenda for Today.

  2. Earth Hour Results • Revelstoke did the best with a 12.1% reduction, followed by Pemberton at 6.8%. Ladysmith and North Cowichan had 5.8% and 4.8%, respect-ively. Nanaimo, at 2.6% beat out Vancouver and Victoria at 2.1% and 1.6%.

Agenda for Today • Announcements, including that Save Linley Valley Nanaimo is holding a public meeting at the Kin Hut on (2730 Departure Bay at Loat) Wednesday at 7 p.m. • Collect assignments • Finish last discussion question • Evaluation of the course and evaluation of your own participation (on paper) • Course evaluation will focus on: • book and reading load • what it was like to read same book in two courses • lectures and discussions • videos • assignments • anything else you want to bring up • Start the review for the final

  4. Topics for 346 Review • what factors drove the post-war boom in suburbanization? What is holding it in place? • what paradigm have planners and urban and regional managers been operating under for the past 70+ years? • new issues vs. old issues facing municipalities and regions [be prepared to talk about the ‘nuts and bolts’ of these issues] • role of built environment to climate change, peak oil, energy consumption, habitat loss, food security, etc. • streetcar city – how ubiquitous was it and how viable a model? Other possible models from Asian, the Middle East, Europe? • how are land use and transportation intertwined?

Topics for 346 Review • what is the significance of demographic change? • what is the significance of economic change? • what criteria can be used to evaluate the best transportation options? • how to enhance food and energy security? • how to make communities more resilient? • how to enhance walkability and public space? Why is public space important? • How to enhance citizen participation? • what might the cities of the future look like and what principles might they embody? • what is the role of culture and place-making in the new paradigm?
