Mayor Meeting • Brown and the East LA 13 meet with the mayor. “This is the East LA 13 that your men arrested.”(73) • The mayor tells Brown that all the protest he is conducting is worthless and that unless he starts a riot he will not, “get a thing.”(74)
Food For Thought • If you were in Brown’s position would you take the mayor’s advice or would you continue to protest peacefully? • What are the benefits and drawbacks of the course of action you chose? • What are your opinions on the mayor even saying that?
Cardinal Condemnation • Brown and 6 Law students try to meet with the Cardinal to request more scholarships for students. Instead they are sent running in circles. • When Brown finally meets the Cardinal, he is branded as an evil servant.
Food For Thought • What is the Cardinal referring to when he says, ” We know who is behind you.”(77) • Why does he believe that? • Do you think it is right that the church turned down Brown’s request? Why or why not?
Chapter 7 • Brown begins his non-violent protest against the church. • He wants to capture the attention of the church to promote social reform. • Make the church more democratic.
Food for Thought • Why is Brown fasting and for how long? • How does this reflect Cesar Chavez’s methods of protest?
Death Threats • Brown received death threats (all from Chicanos.) They wanted him to stop saying horrible things about the Catholic church. • Chicanos in New Mexico take their Catholicism very seriously. • Brown isn’t afraid.
Food for Thought • What are your thoughts on the death threats that Brown has been receiving? • Do you think it’s odd that Brown is getting threats from the people he’s trying to help? • What did Brown mean when he said that “we are the Jews of Nazi America” and that the church and government have combined to exterminate them?
The Three Cholas • During that night at the lawn Brown encountered three teenage girls. • Brown smoked drugs with them and later begin to feel on their bodies and have his way with them. • He couldn’t have sex with them because the blanket was too small.
Food for Thought • Why choose fasting over any other protest? • Do you believe fasting is effective? • Should protesting be all seriousness and no fun? • Pg 85. Brown: “Why can’t one be serious and fun at the same time? Who said you have to suffer and be depressed?”
Chapter 8 • Brown takes on the case to solve the mystery behind the death of Robert Fernandez. • Robert’s death is branded as a suicide(he was hung), but his family believes that he was murdered. • Brown requests that Robert’s body be autopsied again.
Food for Thought • Do you think the police had the right to arrest Robert? • What do you think the conspiracy is behind Robert’s death? Is there a conspiracy? (corruption of the police.) • Do you think he was murdered? Why or why not?
Chapter 9 • The medical examiner’s report comes in which is inconclusive • Zeta Goes to court and encounters extreme bias against Chicanos • The Jury Votes unanimously that the cause of death was suicide
Food for Thought • Do you believe that no matter what Brown could of done, that the case was favored against him? • Was the Trial fair? • Was the psychologist brought in unbiased? Would he have been able to create an accurate personality profile without ever having met the dead man? • What do you think actually happened to Fernandez?
Chapter 10 • Buffalo goes for a drive with his friends to work out his emotions. • Buffalo, Pelon, and Gilbert set a Safeway store on fire • Buffalo changes his name to his middle name Zeta
Food for thought • Buffalo is obviously distraught at the result of this case. What caused him to be so emotionally involved? • Buffalo takes his anger out on a Safeway store by setting it on fire. Can his actions be justified? Are they right? • Buffalo changes his name to Zeta. What does this signify?
Chapter 11 • Buffalo announces his candidacy for sheriff. • Zeta is repeatedly held in contempt of court. • Zeta spends the night in prison.
Food for thought • Zeta says if elected he would dissolve the police and establish a different form of civilian protection. Is this right? Would you vote for Zeta? • Buffalo is held in contempt of court multiple times. Is Zeta being contemptuous or is the judge out of line?
