San Jose MSA in Brief August (P) 2011 Unemployment Rate 10.0% • Population 1,852,994 (CA Department of Finance 1/1/2011 estimate) • About 883,900 jobs in the South Bay (San Jose MSA) • Three largest industry sectors • Professional & Business Services (19.1%) • Manufacturing (18.3%) • Trade, Transportation & Utilities (14.6%) • The South Bay accounts for 6.1% of all the jobs in California (19.2% of all jobs in the State are in the Bay Area)

It consists of dynamic analysis and reporting, based on data entered into a system less than one minute before the actual time of use. They've built another system capable of doing something useful with ginormous streams of realtime data. Last time we saw Facebook release their New Real-Time Messaging System: HBase To Store 135+ Billion Messages A Month. This time it's a realtime analytics system handling over 20 billion events per day (200,000 events per second)with a lag of less than 30 seconds. San Jose MSA Long-term 2008-2018OCCUPATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS • We expect more than twice as many net replacement openings as openings due to growth. • Of the top ten occupations with the most openings, those that require greater than a month of OJT include computer applications and systems software engineers; and general and operations managers. • Most of the top 10 fastest growing occupations relate to info tech, home health care, or biotech/life sciences. Half of those top occupations require at least a bachelor’s degree. The rest require only moderate-term OJT or less.

SAN JOSE MSA INDUSTRY HIGHLIGHTS (2008-2018) • Professional & business services will show a net growth of 16,800 jobs over the 10-year period, with computer systems design adding more than 40 percent of those jobs. • Private educational services, health care, and social assistancewill gain 16,700 jobs, with close to half of those jobs occurring in health care. • Information will add 9,800 jobs.

CA SHORT-TERM OCCUPATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS (Q3 2010 – Q3 2012) • Net replacement openings will outpace openings due to growth. • Top ten occs with most openings (except Customer Service Reps) pay less than CA median hourly wage of $16.64 and require only short or moderate OJT. • General and Operations Managers and RNs will see the most openings for occs with higher educational requirements. • Network systems and data communications analysts are projected to grow the fastest in the short term.

CA SHORT-TERM INDUSTRY HIGHLIGHTS (Q3 2010 – Q3 2012) • Professional & business services will add 152,000 jobs statewide over the two years, with most gains in temporary and other employment services, consulting services, and computer systems design. • Private health carewill gain nearly 54,000 jobs, with close to two-thirds of those jobs in ambulatory health care. • We expect that government at all levels will continue to trim payrolls, losing about 38,000 jobs.

CA LONG-TERM OCCUPATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS (2008 – 2018) • More than twice as many openings from net replacement openings than openings due to growth. • Personal & home care aides, retail salespersons, cashiers, and waiters/waitresses will have the most openings. • Fastest growing occs will include network systems & data communications analysts; medical scientists (except epidemiologists); and personal & home care aides.

CA LONG-TERM INDUSTRY HIGHLIGHTS (2008 – 2018) • Gains in computer systems design, consulting services, and employment services will lead the growth in professional and business services, which will account for more than 20 percent of overall industry growth. • Other growth industries will include ambulatory health care services, such as doctors’ offices; food services and bars; local public schools; and private hospitals.
