What is Static Electricity Static electricity is a stationary charge, which is usually caused by friction. When you rub two objects together the electrons from one are passed on to the other one, negatively charging it and creating static electricity.
Defibrillators One example of a use of static electricity is in defibrillators. The defibrillators are charged with an electrical current and then applied to the body of the patient to restart their heart. Electrolyte gel is smeared on the electrodes (paddles) and is placed on the patient’s body on either side of the heart.
Spray Paint Static electricity is also used in paint spraying cars. The paint gun is negatively charged while the car’s body is positively charged causing them to attract. However when many of the negatively charged paint particles come near each other they spread out because they have the same charge. This is for a smoother and more even spray paint.
Smokestacks Factories also use static electricity in their smoke stacks. They give all the smoke created an electric charge and when it passes by an electrode of the opposite charge most of the smoke sticks to the electrode. This stops the pollution from going out into the atmosphere.
Carpets Carpets also produce static electricity. When you slide your feet across carpets a static charge starts building inside of you and then when you touch a metal object you get zapped. The moisture of the air depends on how much of a shock will happen when you walk over the carpet.
Lightning A natural form of static electricity is lightning. Lightning can be as hot as 30,000 degrees Celsius. Particles in the clouds rub against each other to create static. Lightning occurs when electrons are attracted to protons on the ground or in other clouds.
Issues Even with static electricity's many uses it also has it faults. If a spark of static electricity went of in a large company that has gas or oil it could cause a massive explosion. Static electricity can also damage the components of a computer, the small pieces can not handle even slight shocks.
Lightning Rod The special picture is a lightning rod. It attracts lightning.
