Empirical Data vs. Cartesian Doubt As Demonstrated inDark Star
Set Up In the middle of the 22nd century, humankind has reached a point in its technological advancement to enable colonization of the far reaches of the universe. Armed with artificially intelligent "Thermostellar Triggering Devices", the scout ship Dark Star and its crew have been in space alone for twenty years on a mission to destroy "unstable planets" which might threaten future colonization.
Because of the tedium of the long, one of the astronauts accidentally activates one of the sentient bombs while it is still in Dark Star’s bomb bay. • The acting commander does a spacewalk (aka 2001 A Space Odyssey) but discovers that he does not have the ability to manually undo the programing. • Instead he tries to argue with the bomb (while the command crew panics) that the data it is basing its process of blowing up is not manifestly certain.

Interestingly although the bomb does pause its countdown, it eventually descends into complete self-centeredness. • Dismissing all outer data as unreliable, it instead determines that it is alone in the darkness, and that it is God • Follow this link to see what occurs next: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luaRtGn2tsI&feature=related
